Poster: A snowHead

I the light of the total number of people being lost in avlanches and at present not knowing if it was a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time or stupidity is it worth considering getting transponder for every day use even if you only go slitly of the beaten track.
What are the thing we should be looking at in terms of feactures and price etc.
Having only used the ones supplied when on fresh tracks week or when getting extra lessons i have no knowadge if what we should be looking for.

ntfarmer,
a) If you are untrained in backcountry skiing then I would advise only skiing it with a reputable UAIGM guide.
b) If you are skiing off piste it is always useful to ski with a shovel, probe, tranceiver. Hiring these is more economical if you are only occasionaly going 'off the beat track'
c) If you are skiing further off-piste hiring or purchasing the test proven ABS Airbag http://pistehors.com/backcountry/wiki/Gear/ABS-Airbag
Interms of Tranceivers, Pieps is the brand widely regarded and their new 3 transmitter electonic system located buried victims very quickly and efficiently.
Good overview of equipment can be found here http://pistehors.com/backcountry/wiki/Gear/Avalanche-Gear.
In general if you need to ask then I would advise that you continue to hire all equipment from local touring/offpiste specialist resort ski shops

If someone intending to ski off piste there seems little reason not to actually have your own equipment and be familiar with it. Gaining that familiarity might mean taking a course such as http://www.avalanchetraining.info/ and practising etc.

ise, Indeed I do! It depends how much you need to do. Also many guides will include in their price all avalanche equipment hire.

I've never heard of that, most guides I know view it as a nice little earner to hire them out and flog them on later.

When i did the fresh tracks course all equipment was included. Unforchantly for me they lack of snow did not give the group the best selection of off piste. olthrough sking down from the top of the pitta camba (spelling?) and then skining up to the monstary on the st barnard pass for the night stop was compensation. Only to be out done the nest day after a 2hr up hill skin to ski all the way back to the valley bottom was amazing.
Since then farm and kids have prevented weeks away doing what can only be described as the best sking out.
The reason for the question really relates to nipping of the side of piste etc.
