Poster: A snowHead
|
I'm looking into disappearing to Saas-Fee for a long weekend in late June with a friend, but at the minute I'm struggling with the practicalities of the transfer to Saas-Fee. It looks like flying to Geneva would be our best option, but is there any sort of regular bus/coach/etc, or would the only option be a private transfer?
(My friend drives, but would like to avoid it if at all possible)

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

After a bit more research, it seems I can get a train to Visp or Brig, and a bus from there to Saas-Fee. Does the bus still run in the summer? And is it just me, or does Switzerland make travelling on a train far more complicated than the UK/France?

The train service in Switz is great. Clean, punctual and reasonably priced. I believe the bus is a post bus and as such runs all year round. Probably less frequent in summer than winter but thats just a guess on my part! Have u considered Zermatt as an alternative?

mark_s, you catch the train from Geneva airport to Visp, then transfer to a bus for the last part up to Saas-Fee. The trains and buses run every half-hour, year round. Total time is about 3 1/2 hours. Mostly, there are no changes with the trains.
Turn left after you have passed through customs, down to the end of the arrivals hall, bear right through a revolving door and you are in the station. There are ticket machines in front of you, the fare is about CHF150, and they work in English. You can pay by credit card or, at some machines, in cash. You can even buy over the Internet before you leave the UK. Alternatively, it will be cheaper for you to buy a Swiss Transfer Ticket over the Internet (I think you can get them from Swiss Railways and several other sources).
The bus station at Visp is just outside the train station and the Saas-Fee bus arrives at and departs from the closest stand. It all runs very smoothly.
Remember to go into the bus station in Saas-Fee the day before you leave to reserve a place on the bus back to Visp.
