Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi!
I am part of a group going to Les Arcs in Feb...
The group is split in two with one half arriving in Lyon at 14:00 and one at 18:00.
We plan to drive to 1800 and what I really want to know is how is the road up to 1800? The first group contains drivers but they are not particularly experienced on mountain roads. Is it worth those in the first group waiting the four hours for the more confident drivers or is the road up to 1800 a fairly easy one without too many scary moments?

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

smudger, it's an easy drive. The road is normally kept well clear of snow so unless you arrive when it's snowing it should be fairly straightforward.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

The Chantel apartments. The same building as the apartment you offer if I'm not mistaken!

OK (great choice!). The road up to the main part of 1800 is normally fine. It's cleared as soon as it snows and the volume of traffic makes sure that snow is swept off entirely. However, the final part of the road up to Chantel, about a quarter of a mile, gets much less traffic and part of it is in the shade for much of the day. As a result it sometimes still has snow on it when the main road up to 1800 is clear. If you're in a car without winter tyres you might have to use chains.
A useful tip if you do need to put on chains for this final part of the drive: pop into the multistorey carpark which you see as you reach the main part of the resort. You have two hours of free parking so it won't cost you anything, and it's much easier top put chains on while the car is standing on snow-free concrete out of the elements than it is on a snowy road.

Thanks again...
You don't happen to know what time the supermarkets and garages are open till in Bourg St Maurice do you?
Are cars don't come with snow tyres or chains so we are going to have to purchase them in Bourg if necessary but might arrive there quite late. Would it be better to try and purchase them nearer Lyon earlier on?

smudger, i found myself in your situation with a car rental company 2 years ago, also going to Les Arcs - i asked if they had suitable chains to hire - they didn't but they said that if i bought a set of chains and kept the receipt, that they would refund me the cost of the chains - which they duly did at the end of the journey (even though i had never used the things thankfully) - the company was Europcar - i wouldn't expect that this is standard practice but it's worth asking at the rental point for a set of chains rather than have to pick them up yourself

smudger, the SuperU in Bourg is open until 7.30pm I think. Chains seem to be sold very widely - every service station, supermarket, etc.
