Why are people being sooo negative! we've had an awesome start to the winter ski season, with well over average snowfall! We had record snow in november and early december and thenn an extremely cool period throughout december. 1 week of warmer weather which is (completley usual for every season to have at least 1 warm spell) brings out gloom and doom for the rest of the ski season. Tempeatures are set to drop and snow is forecast next week. Im predicting that february/ march will see more record snowfalls for the alps. If you are interested about the whole climate change debate have a look at these new reports, both are from this new year. Happy skiing!

Agree with kermit, you should have seen last year's doomful posts. There were lots of threads with titles like 'the end of skiing?', 'no more snow for the alps', etc.
This year is fab by comparison, but you know what, I skied three weeks last year and they were all fine too! Some people just like to be miserable, and then to very generously try and spread their misery around.
Me, I look like this just thinking about getting out to the mountains!

There's the opposite tendency in the magazines. All 3 ski mags that I buy began the season with a 'Global Warming: Codswallop. Last season was nowhere near as bad as everyone said" article.
One stood out in particular where they said "Anyone in <some> or Verbier would have wondered what all the fuss was about".
Well, I was in Verbier in January 07, and we were skiing on a 0.3cm thick sheet of man-made ice/slush through an otherwise sun-drenched grassy meadow, surrounded by butterflies and daffodils.

i think it's a trait beloved of many humans to cry " the end of the world is nigh!!". we seem to have been doing it since the dawn of time and, strangely, the world has yet to end.

I'm not being -ve look at my recent post ref snow and conditions in and around schaldming. Despite some warmer temps and even some rain lower down the conditions are excellent from top to bottom. Any new snow that comes this weekend will only improve the conditions further. And the beer is still flowing nice and cold.

I think last years snow reports on SH's were pretty good and I think the industry gets too carried away one way or another.
This year it has been mega hype about the best start to the winter etc. While that was maybe true for the French alps for the 12th of December things are now pretty so so below 2000 meters with good conditions higher up, certainly where the piste services have got to work. There's been a lot of wind which hasn't been kind at altitude and rain which has washed things out below 1200-1400m (in France at least)... but then all the big resorts have most of their pistes above this altitude.
It is probably Austria and eastern Switzerland's winter at the moment.
