Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Wild weather and wild animal stop downhills

 Poster: A snowHead

click to see high res imageHigh winds, long-awaited heavy snowfalls - and even a wild animal - have affected Europe's two big downhill events this weekend. The women's race at Val d'Isere was cancelled on Saturday when winds strong enough to damage race installations battered the OK course. And it's snowing heavily [this photo from PG]
Over at Val Gardena in Italy the famous 'camel humps' downhill was shortened to isolate racers from dangerous winds at the top of the course. Then a wild deer strayed on to the course, to the amusement and cheers of spectators! ...

A forecast 40cm overnight snowfall is expected to cause cancellation of the second women's downhill race at Val d'Isere on Sunday.

There are reports (and results for the men's event) on www.snowracers.net and www.skiracing.com

click to see high res imagekuwait_ian, the snow has been falling heavily overnight. snowHead Shame about the World Cup, but I suppose we should get our priorities right! Around 25 cm in Bourg SM has fallen since it began to snow again late evening. No wind here, but might be a different situation up at Val d'Isère. Not even sure if it will be possible to get there this morning! They were letting us through with (4) snow tyres yesterday, but might insist on chains today. Holidaymakers arriving by car today beware!

PG, well racing is a minority sport. The majority badly need the white blankets. snowHead snowHead snowHead That early morning shot is great. What's the bright white patch ? BTW, the 'click to see hi res image' pop-up on mouse hover isn't there on the top pic - but it does work.

kuwait_ian, I didn't put in the top pic - it needs a little more code [edit: done..]. The photo required a full second's exposure - my flash isn't working - hence the large white patch from the street light. It's really chucking it down right now! The course inspection was scheduled to begin 15 minutes ago, at 7.30 French time. Can't see it happening!

Here's a further report on how things turned out in Val d'Isere over the weekend, from Canada.com:
Quote:
... unrelenting snowfalls made it impossible for course workers to clear the piste on time for Sunday. Winds of up to 150 kilometres per hour over the weekend created dangerous snow drifts that buried the safety netting on the course.

Wild weather has certainly hit New Zealand. A mid-summer blizzard, with snowfall as low as 900m, has affected the country ... leaving this part of the southern hemisphere wondering if a white Christmas is possible!
