Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I've just heard a horrible rumour that BAA will be having a strike over New Year - right when I am meant to be going skiing. I hear they have to give 7 days notice and are going to announce the strike dates on the 20th. DISASTER. Does anyone have any inside info on this....or you anyone reassure me that i won't have to cancel my holiday to LDA?!?!?!?! Puzzled

(Sorry if there's another thread on this, looked byt couldn't find a recent'un)

I came across this discussion thread when I Googled it, which makes for interesting reading. There are a couple of BAA employees who have contributed which gives some more info (and amazing insight into their ridiculous views!!)

lucky you living in france. grr im jealous. I have to put up with this government for at least another 6 years before i can even vote. As ill be 18 about 2 months after the next election in 2 summers time. Im better educated than a lot of adults on politics (im taking an A Level in politics) and i cant even choose my future. Not that the tories are a good alternative.

the bastarding labour govt and tuition fees, why the f**k are they so high? before we can even get on the housing ladder we are £20k down, the government just dont think their policy through.

they cannot provide their public sector workers and vital businesses workers with decent pay. I think it is a joke. I know theyve got a hard job to do, but for god sakes this effects everyone.

If i was flying from a BAA airport this weekend, i'd be furious. Thank god for Luton.

RANT OVER!

Christopher, Rant understood, BTW I am lucky enough to live in Switzerland, France is just for weekends Twisted Evil and yes I do appreciate how lucky I am. The UK has managed to economically powerhouse it's way into a situation that is hideous IMO. Mostly meddling politicians, micro management of law, order and the health service and the belief that the man in the street doesn't know a stealth tax when he sees one. And a government/civil service that is the only reason that unemployment is so low - i.e. all of the employable under employed are now civil servants, generally with "inspector of " in their job titles.

Rant also over.

The reason this isn't on the major news channels is that there is nothing to report as yet - on Thursday there will be, if the vote is for strike action as expected. According to the UNITE website (http://www.amicustheunion.org/default.aspx?page=7578) the start of any action is likely to be in January:

Quote:

The [Virgin] ballot follows protracted pay negotiations over the last seven months and the Unite member’s rejection of the company’s final pay offer on the 1st November. The strike ballot of Unite members is due to begin this week and close on the 20 December. Unite is recommending that member’s vote in support industrial action in an effort to break the deadlock.

The British Airports Authority (BAA) strike ballot on the company’s proposed closure of their pension scheme, also being conducted by Unite, is due to close on the same day. This raises the prospect of severe airport and airline disruption early in the New Year.

Because they have to give 7 days notice of strike action (http://www.berr.gov.uk/files/file18013.pdf - para 50), my interpretation is that if the result of the ballot was announced at 3pm on Thursday 20th December, and notice was immediately given of the intention to commence industrial action in 7 days, no action could start before 3pm on the 27th December.

I've seen suggestions that they might start on the 30th, and the suggestion from the union that it would be in January, but what we can be sure of is that any action would have to occur within 28 days of the ballot result being announced (or 56 days if they agree an extension with the employer(s)), so it would all be over by the 17th January at the latest, unless a new ballot was held.

The premise for the strike seems to me to be somewhat disingenious - the alternative to closing the final salary scheme to new entrants is to either close it to everyone, or to find some other way to make up the projected shortfall in the amount available to pay the pensions of those who have retired, or who will retire as members of the scheme. The likely approaches to find this cash involve making staff redundant, increasing charges to the airlines, or both - so is this a case of stupid turkeys voting for Christmas? It seems to me that what the union consolidation has achieved is to allow a smaller number of more militant people to justify their position by throwing their weight around - after all, no-one wants to join a union which is seen as weak, so they have to prove their strength regularly... rolling eyes

PS. The reason I've followed this up is that I'm due to fly out of Stansted on the 27th December at 1150, and back on the 6th January around noon - being stuck in Austria I can cope with, but being stuck in Stansted may just be enough to tip me over the edge...
