Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Wow, I'm back again to snow reports reporting from north lake tahoe. Let last years reporting slip after a decent start. After a slow start The Sierra ended up with <50% avg.snowfall. Had some good powder but nothing like the previous 2 winters here. All the resorts except Kirkwood came in under 320inches (8m).
Weak la Nina conditions forecasted this winter. Pretty active so far this fall with the first of 6 little snowstorms coming through sep 22. We are flirting with having maybe a foot (25cm) with a snowline of around +8500ft(2590.8m). Calling for 2-4inches(5-10cm) tonight. With sun and warm temps forecast for the following days the early snow won't last long. Mammoth has announced nov8 as their opening. Tahoe resorts are announcing openings about a week after that.
Counting down the days to when the rocks are covered.

It was a mild la Nina winter in 1906\07 that produced 73feet (22.25m) of snow here in the Sierra Nevada. Snowiest (is that a word?) year here on record.
Fingers are being crossed. Heavenly (my home resort) is installing a new HS quad (replacing a fixed grip double) accessing some new stuff on the Nevada side. I'm losing some of my secret stashes, but it should help to spread out crowds on that side of the resort when the upper lifts are on windhold.

Mammoth mountain has made their scheduled opening date this year opening Nov 8. Heavenly has begun snowmaking and is still on track to make their announced opening, next Friday, Nov 16.

On nov10-nov11 the northern sierra crest received 10-12 inches (25-30cm) of new snowfall. Temps are staying low at night into the days creating perfect snowmaking conditions. Friday Nov16, Heavenly will hopefully join Boreal as the second resort in Tahoe to open for the 07/08 season.

Heavenly has postponed its opening till next week and Boreal has suspended lift operations for the time-being due to recent temp inversions in the alpine .

According to my contact who is in Reno right now. There is little or no snow to ski on at any Tahoe resorts. It is also to warm to make snow. Any resorts that do open this weekend (Squaw) it just a cable car ride to the top for dinner.

3snowboards - I'm heading to Tahoe for the first time with some colleagues from work mid January

We've been looking into northstar and heavenly - and we're erring on the side of heavenly largely due to the better nightlife (I'm far more keen for the snow myself!)

What would you advise? (I've done 4 weeks boarding (and 4 weeks skiiing if that makes the blindest bit of difference Wink ) and another 2 have done similar and there will be two with just one week on a board)

Also I'm looking to buy my first board out there - making use of the weak dollar Smile Any shops in particular you'd recommend or avoid? I'm looking at the Burton Customs at the moment ::drools::

If you gotta have Burton, there is a good shop right on the same road as the Reno airport." Out of bounds" is located at the corner of Plume and south Virginia. Its only a board shop. If you want skis too you need to go another half mile to Reno mountain sports (great shop and the only local shop that carrys Arbor) or Bobo's. They are basically next to each other on Moana.

The first in a forecasted series of potent pacific storms arrived overnight and has already deposited over a foot (30cm) of snow along the sierra crest, and is expected to continue thru today.
I will update snow totals in between this storm and the stronger one expected to arrive on Thursday.

well the second storm is moving in and I thought I would lay out the numbers from tuesdays snowstorm that split as it came ashore. Most snow around tahoe I know of was 17". Further south by Yosemite and mammoth some places above 7500ft.elevation got 30". This is onto a snowpack only 1ft to 3ft deep. If I was travelling in the Backcountry here I would be wary of conditions in steeper terrain today especially since we had winds involved of 70+ knots. Probably some windloaded areas from yesterday that are 10ft deep easy. Laying on a foot of sugary snow!! Yikes!
Good timing on the storms though, I have 11 days off for the holidays and my golden pass that has no blacked out days. Won't be having fun in the alpine till Saturday though.
If it dumps tonite ill write something about it.

60 inches in 24 hours in Kirkwood !!!!!!!!!!! Very Happy

Only that place can get so much in a 24 hour period. After a terrible start 90 inches base now. They have overtaken almost every resort now in the last 2 days ! So wish I was back out there...I miss it. Sad

SAC has a full time meteorologist, and ive always thought of them making some conservative snow predictions. Shocked

Snow showers continue today Monday in the Tahoe basin with the western slope expecting the majority of the precip.
Snowfall amounts since Thursday of around 6-10 feet in the higher elevations are common. Thigh deep at Heavenly!

We got some blower conditions happening right now. A foot plus of 5% with a forecasted line up of storms on the horizon and the memories of the recent storms has people totally excited. Chains are required to be carried over all the sierra passes until May 1. They know how to deal with the snow, but sometimes the snow is just coming down too fast and blowing and since we don't use salt, the roads are nasty, so chain requirements happen all the time.

1230PM here in Tahoe.
This last weekend of the month is turning out to be a whopper! I think we received 12-24" last night and its snowing hard and they are calling for up to 36" more by tommorrow morning here in the northern sierra. 4 feet 100 miles south down by mammoth in the southern sierra.
Upper lifts at Heavenly not expected to run today. I got three runs down comet before it went on windhold about 10. Now only stagecoach and boulder spinning. What's open is awesome though. Will post vid to YouTube in an edit later.
Here is the video i shot today. Quality is lacking.

I wish I could just once share the joy with everyone of a true sierra powder day, like the ones we are receiving now. If there is a god it makes you wonder if he is a skier or a snowboarder. I'm not sure about the other tahoe resorts but Hev is approaching 20 feet for just Jan!!
Much sickness was had even though I didn't get on a lift till today till 1230. Faceshots and fresh tracks for 3.5hrs till the lifts stopped running 30min ago. Today was much like yesterday without the winds. I think all lifts ran except skye. Taking off work tommorrow for some windbuffed refresh provided by tonites forecast flurries.
All the fun gullies are filling in now that we have 100"+ base. Then again all the snow is creating new features. Amazingly there are still exposed sharkteeth as witnessed by the edge on the tail of my arbor that has been shamelessly ripped away from its proper place.

920PM (PST)
A little warmer today than yesterday. Temps reached about 20F which is about perfect, but the winds were howling. The falling snow mixed with all the blowing snow caused periodic whiteout conditions. Once again skye lift didn't open at all, but all the others did. Even early the winds were strong and kept building then upper lifts started shutting down. By 2PM a gust measured at 75knots prompted the shutdown of the final lift...stagecoach, where I happened to be standing watching the lift attendants move the barricades. Several hundred people were standing in line for the bus to Southlake but luckily I usually start my days at that lodge and just happened to be in the sixth parking spot from the lift.
Anyways I did get in 5hrs of some boot deep chalky goodness. Bootpacking anywhere is not recommended. I ended up getting stuck in a gully and had to hike out and it took me about a half hour to climb out a distance of 100'. Hard taking steps when you are up to your hips and sinking. It was kinda fun though since I didn't have anywhere to be anyways. A couple more systems forecasted to be cruising through so it looks like a cold and white weekend ahead.

I'm sure you will get some sun while you are here. As you count down the days till your trip, a nice snow event happening right now. Up to 18" coming before it ends tommorrow, a break saturday and then another quick storm sat night into sunday. Should be a sickter weekend of riding. Anything over a 3 day forecast is not to be trusted in these parts but all signs are pointing to boner city!

I'm thinking of driving from San Francisco (SFO) to South Lake Tahoe, probably Heavenly, on 3rd March. A couple of questions that I would really appreciate any answers to, if possible:

* I'm thinking of pre-ordering the '7 resort' lift ticket and ski equipment hire online from http://www.skisafariextras.com/
Has anyone used this service before?

* Do I really need to hire a 4x4 car or is the bus system sufficient to get from/to SFO and around the lake to the different resorts?

* If I do hire a 4x4 from SFO they (AVIS / HERTZ) don't seem to provide snow equipped rentals etc... do I really need all-weather tyres and snow chains etc? Does anyone know a rental company that does snow equipped rentals from SFO?

My flight is already confirmed but I'm a little unsure about driving in snowy/icy conditions, and even slightly anxious about possibly driving without the right equipment!

Thanks in advance for any advice and/or tips about this journey.

Vin C, Would seriously recomend a car for Tahoe area rather than bus service especially if you want to take advantage of all the other mountains on offer. Try these guys for a 4x4 http://www.fastcarhire.co.uk/ have used them before, they usually use Alamo or National. If you take the 4x4 you wont need snow chains.

If you can have you thought about flying into Reno rather than SFO to save on driving time Puzzled cuts down that 4 hour drive wink

7 seven resort lift ticket sounds ok, when we were there it was only 6 tho. Mt rose wasnt included. If they still have the same deal Mt Rose on a Tuesday was only $20 per day Shocked and it pays not to use it at Alpine Meadows as their price was cheaper too. You need to check each moutains prices and see what oyu are paying for the 7 resort ticket. Smile If its still the same setup its no more hassle as all you got was a book of vouchers that you then exchanged for a day pass.

Enjoy the trip, its a great area to ski Smile
