Poster: A snowHead

I will be off to Munich feb half term and driving to Austria. I have noted on 's that for driving in Austria snow tires are effectively required. Does anyone know whether car hire at Munich airport snow tires are automatically included or do you have to pay extra?
From previous trips I suspect the latter but was wondering if anything has changed?

Just fyi, you have to be at least 21 to rent a car in Germany, and I would doubt that they automatically include "snow tyres", winter tyres probably.. Knowing car rental companies though they'd probably charge.

T Bar, I always ask for 'em but never get 'em - actually, I've stopped asking for 'em. Timmaah is right, they are at best winter tyres. This has never bothered me and I've only needed chains a handful of times in Austria. Just make sure you practice putting chains on tho'... nothing worse than being stauck late at night in the freezing cold trying to figure it out. Also, this may seem stupid, but check which wheels are the driven wheels - I have seen people with chains on the wrong tyres before now.

I,ve hired in Munich before. In winter the cars are equipped with winter tyres. Virtually everyone who lives in cold regions like Bavaria swaps over to Winter Tyres when the temperature drops down.
As of May 2006, you can be fined between 20 – 40 Euros if your car is not suitably equipped for the prevailing weather conditions. You will certainly be fined if you are causing an obstruction. In extreme circumstances your insurance may be void if there is a case of “Gross negligence†i.e. driving on summer tyres in snowy mountainous regions (Bavaria).
Also, if insured through German insuracne company they will not pay out if your in an accident & were using summer tyres in adverse condtions.
Winter tyres work better in cold weather due to them having a different compound of rubber and a more chunky tread pattern

I hired in Munich 2 weeks ago. Alamo told me they only had one remaining car in my prepaid hire class clad in winter tyres. The others they said were summer and I'd have to pay a premium if I wanted winter tyres. I paid.
