A nasty fall there by one of the competitors - not named for spoiler reasons.

Hmmm. Looked less than pleasant that did.
Snow conditions obviously not helping, nor the shortened course, but I can see why they haven't held a downhill for so long, it seems so tight that they just seem to follow the trees, not especially interesting.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

That's 2 really nasty falls. Both look serious. Certainly the race should have been stopped before the 2nd one as the visibility was clearly virtually nil, and the snow on the course were making it very dodgy if they lost the line.
Surprising though that neither of the commentators mentioned Meisnitzers previous very nasty accident. It was a good while ago, but if this is serious then it's probably the end for her racing career. She's over 30 I believe.
Let's all keep our fingers crossed for the two hurt girls, and raise our hats to the bravery of these downhillers.

easiski, I was amazed at the speed they were achieving in those conditions.

Just watched this on Austrian TV. The Austrian trainers are incensed that the race was allowed to go ahead. Basically looking at the course it was more fitting for a deep powder competition than a downhill! Apparently the organisers insisted on starting because they believed that Vonn had a good chance of winning. Crazy. Some of the racers refused to start. Rightly so, in my opinion.

Mike Lawrie, I was surprised at how many followed after the first accident !

I'm amazed they let it go on in the conditions. The second accident looked almost inevitable as other competitors wobbled. They were extremely brave, particularly the ones who looked as if they were going for it.
I'd agree with the Austrian trainers - it didn't look suitable for a downhill and it should have been called off after the first fall.

Just watched the end of the coverage (had to record it, as my Strictly come dancing was voted for in the house). That second injury looks dreadful. Well done to the racers who were prepared to make a stand, but also to those who gave it a shot (probably knowing the race would be cancelled before many more than 30 had raced and therefore a slow run would probably still pick up points). At the very least, if they hadn't stopped it when vis was virtually nil, they should have called it as soon as 30 had got down.

Both crashes where bad and could have and should have been avoided. The race should not have gone ahead. Or at least stopped after the first crash.

At the very least they should have stopped it after no 30! If they were desparate to get a result, then that would have been the thing.

Wow. Do we have anything further on ASB?

As far as I can make out with my French: torn posterior cruciate, but an intact anterior cruciate, with some lateral ligament damage - perhaps less bad than anticipated. Those screams certainly made my blood curdle though....

I was thinking "lateral ligaments gone for sure".
Thanks, MB. I have yet to see a newscast followup here.
