It'll be just like every other law in France - it won't be observed, so I'll be able to smoke to my hearts content, and ensure I blow lots of smoke over moaning Brits eating their dinner

The only difference is that from 1st Jan the moaning brits will be able to have you thrown out rather than rely on your good manners.

Christopher, the only people who seem seriously annoyed at the moment are the proprietors of tabacs.

Some of the bars have already become non-smoking. If the law works in Italy, I can't see why it won't (eventually) do so in France.

However, smoking will not be banned completely in Casino's in France ann exemption has been made for them.
Someone remind are French Casino's operated by members of the 'family'

Quite a few bars in Chamonix went no-smoking last year in advance of the ban, much to my surprise. I haven't noticed any flagrant disregard of it yet, though I was expecting to see loads.

easiski, it's canton by canton in Switzerland. There's a ban in Ticino (the Italian speaking part) and I think there might be one coming in Geneva. Don't know about Berne though.

I was amused recently by a notice in a hostel where I stayed in Estonia that read:
Please do not smoke in the hostel.
It is illegal and some people have actually died from smoking.
Besides, the smoke alarms will go off and they're bloody loud.
They had a smoking ban come in a few months ago, but some bar have special smoking rooms which seem to be made out of perspex and are more than a little similar to gas chambers. Locals would, one at a time, wander in and speed-smoke a cirgarette before rejoining their friends.

easiski,
I would say standing outside a bar anywhere in Ireland this evening would be a much more unpleasant experience than standing outside in the cool, crisp air of the mountains. We don't get much frost, but with damp air the windchill is pretty severe.
I recall sitting outside the Polar bear at the PSB and found it quite pleasant.

I think some resort bars are going non-smoking from the start of this season rather than implement the ban after the season has started.

Why? It's perfectly true to say that a) alcohol is a worse problem and b) smoking does not change a person's personality. Though it's probably overstating the case to say that the ban will be 'dangerous' since no-one actually has to smoke at all and people could just wait until they got home.

Smoking -"Some 86,500 people died in England on average each year from 1998 to 2002, the Health Development Agency said" source BBC
Alcohol- "The number of alcohol-related deaths has more than doubled from 4,144 in 1991 to 8,386 in 2005." source Office of Nat Statistics
So aprox. 10X more die from smoking.
Alcohol mainly kills through misuse whereas smoking just kills

Also if you smoke in the same room as me it could harm my health wereas if you drink alcohol in the same room as me you only perhaps damage your health

jbob, does that alcohol-related deaths figure include people stabbed by p!ssed teenagers and run over by drunk drivers, or is it just the ones who managed to kill themselves without involving any of the rest of us?

Nice try lizzard you can haggle with me, but you really can't negotiate with Lung Cancer.
Interestingly the stats are far more flaky on second hand or is it second lung smoke, you are 80X more likely to get Lung Cancer as a smoker and the non smokers who do get Lung Cancer often have an identifiable non cigarette related provoking factor, ie some industrial process they have worked in, although if you live with a heavy smoker or work in a smoky pub you are also in the firing line.
