redrunmarcus, Nevis! Having skiied Glencoe and Nevis this week deffinately Nevis. Not sure about Cairngorms etc..

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

redrunmarcus, If you are driving, wait and see and then go to the best spot on the day. Once you get to Scotland none of them are all that far from each other (Nevis, Glencoe, Cairngorm). Have fun - all 3 look great at the moment. Very Happy

20-04, so thats this weekend. Check the weather forecasts on winterhighland.info and the links to Geof Monk's detailed forecasts on MWIS then go to whichever of Coe, Nevis or Cairngorm has the best forecast overhead conditions and lowest wind speeds. The snow is great at all three as far as I can tell. Haven't skied Nevice since easter weekend, but it looks to have improved since then, and Cairngrom was brilliant at the weekend bar the overhead conditions (20m vis or less at times). I'll tell you what it like after I've been again tomorrow (day 28 of Scottish skiing for me this season Toofy Grin

I'm driving up from Loughborough in Englandshire on Thursday Dave so an up to date report from you would be really helpfull.

If you can access the net on your mobile, point it to http://winterhighland.info and you'll get the WAP/Mobile Web reports. The latest official report and lift status from the areas, plus the independently compiled General Situation report/overview.

snowHeads are a friendly bunch.

Winterhighland is a great resource - although I'm missing its forum at the mo. Also don't forget the Mountain Weather Information Serivce (www.mwis.org.uk) which is updated at 1630 each day, and normally very accurate.

redrunmarcus, I went last weekend - to Nevis on Saturday & Glencoe on Sunday. It was amazing when the sun came out at both. I did a report for Glencoe on WH as there wasn't one up. The pictures I took (and some previous jaunts) are here:

Indeed look at more of Jamie's fantastic photos, his last Cairngorm shots are from Monday, but a sneak preview in the forum says he's been back today!

I have been to Glencoe 5 times this winter & the cover at the top is the most that's been there all season, it's only the very bottom (green) run above the access chair that's starting to melt. At Nevis the bottom of the Alpha & Quad were right down to the mats on Saturday but it was only the bottom 30-50m of the very lowest runs, so not really a problem. Higher up the cover was fantastic (untracked off piste after 4pm on the front of the mountain). There will probably be more reports on WH before the w/e. It's a pity the forum's still not up again yet over there (although I see a few familiar names here & at HI). Alan's forecasting (WH) has proved dependable; he lives up there and analyses the data himself then gives a synopsis. Forecasts are also available at netweather & snow-forecast as well as the metoffice & MWIS area forecasts. The most important parameters for enjoyment this weekend will be overhead conditions & wind.
I've managed 12 days so far in the UK (weekends only) & I only live up the road in Lancaster. Probably going up this w/e & will go wherever the overhead looks best (that's partly why I didn't go to CairnGorm last w/e despite the snow and not having managed to go there this season). Also depends on some other peoples plans, but hopefully I'll be a bit more organised (yeah, & pigs might fly) than last weekend and make some firm decisions tomorrow. Any other questions (from how to get there to what's the food like) just post them, I'm sure they can be answered.

You know it makes sense.

I'm sat in work about to set up tomorrows experiment, but completely knackered as I'm just back from Cairngorm. Absolutely brilliant. Wall to wall sunshine bar two brief snow showers. It was suprisingly cold and quite windy from the south, which was drifting in fresh powder to places like the Ciste Gulley and the Aonach bowl. I spent most of the day lapping the WWpoma (in fact first lap I had to skin out as they hadn't opened it to the public - I was pushing it as the Ciste tow had stopped when i got to it and the WWpoma had just started up so I headed off down the gulley hoping the poma would be open when I got there). The Ciste Gulley had been pisted and then had powder drifted in on top so was really nice. The Ciste bowl (down from the bottom of the Ptarmigan tow to the gulley) was great - CML had pisted it out 20 bashers wide, yep 20 bashers wide Very Happy

and then some powder had drifted in. The Ryvoan run and West Wall were unpisted and fairly choppy, but pwder had drifted in and it was a nice ski and not to crusty. Best was probably the Aonach Bowl. If you enetered it from the fenced entry high on the M2 (not from the top of the old Aonach poma) you dropped onto a really nice soft powder line, really nice.

The off piste was a bit crusty in places particularly where it wasn't skiied much, it stayed fairly cold all day so never really softened much in the sun above midstation. One problem was that it was quite busy - more like a weekend than midweek - particularly the WWpoma which was popular. Not helped by the fact that the Ciste Tow broke just before lunch and couldn't be fixed (sorted now for tomorrow according to the CML website).

If you can get the time off for tomorrow (or your ill wink

) get up there while its this good!
