Poster: A snowHead

Has anyone ever skied in the Vosges, particularly Gerardmer. Just bought a house in Burgundy and this looks like the nearest resort for weekend ski trips so any advice would be gratefully received!

"These webcams of the Massif des Vosges allow you to control the weather and the snow for your cross-country skiing and snowboarding off-piste. " Just made me giggle - if only!!

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

We have only been there in the summer. There were obvious ski stations around, but the Vosges are a fair bit lower than the Alps, so snow cover is bound to be more "iffy".
You would probably be better off going to some of the closer Swiss resorts than to the Vosges, unless you know that there is good snow cover before you set out.

It is a beautiful part of the world.
But they have suffered from poor snow in recent times. The hills are low and the world is warming up.

2005-6 was a year of record snowfalls for the Vosges with over 3 meters depth recorded on the Ballon d'Alsace (1400m), that's more than in the Tarentaise resorts that year, people were skiing until May on the Hohneck couloirs - the local hospital were very surprised to have a ski injury that month. Last year there was no real skiing but it is going to snow in the Vosges tomorrow so who knows what this winter will bring.

I lived in Luxembourg for a while some years ago and went skiing in the Vosges including Gerardmer several times.
I found it very pleasant for a weekend warmup with a pleasant ambiance, but more than that rather limited.
I would also say that it's the sort of area I would not plan to go to in advance, but would wait until they have had fresh snow during the week and then ring up and book accommodation, which we were always able to find.
