Poster: A snowHead

Hi, I am fairly new to skiing, I had a week last christmas and got a taste for it although need a cheaper option for this year now being a single parent , and a good place for kids lessons age 5 and 6. Any suggestions would be great, and sites to book with, is it better to orgnise everything separately or a package deal?? Thanks in advance for your help!

pollyanna, welcome to snowHeads
Are you thinking about going at Christmas, or later on in the season?
If you are confident utting together your own package, then that can usually work out cheaper than the brochure price of a tour op....however it is sometimes possible to get a good deal on a package which makes that the cheaper option! You just have to look round and see.
www.igluski.com is a good place to look

Pollyanna, there are some half price deals with skiworld for Christmas - worth checking out

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

pollyanna, welcome to Snowheads, I hope you find something. The suggestion to try skiworld is a good one - we used them in the past, they were low cost, but good value. A catered chalet with other kids in it would probably be your best bet. A DIY jobbie might be a bit lonely, and hard work, on your own.

livigno in italy is a great place to ski with kids and the ski schools are good. its also cheap to eat and drink and lift passes are reasonable prices too.....check out http://www.mountain-toursltd.com/ they can organise most of your holiday for you at reasonable prices. the owner is english and lives in the resort and doesn't charge any comission to you.....you pay the prices you would pay if you were organising it yourself. snow is coming down in the resort too am off in a fortnight and its looking pretty good already

pam w, thats what i'm worried about, being the odd one out and feeling very isolated as it will mostly be couples and 2 parent families, but I don't want my kids to miss out just because of this if you know what i mean! Also can anyone advise on a resort with a fairly short flight time and short transfer??

pollyanna, if the chalets I have been in are anything to go by you will not feel isolated at all, and will probably find someone to ski with during the day. I'd recommend one not too big, not too small. Maybe about 15 - 16 people. Flaine has a short transfer time from Geneva, and is fairly snowsure (better than Chatel in that regard) though not very pretty. Probably more convenient, too, and with two small kids to manage on your own you need to be near the slopes and ski school assembly point. Make sure you get them to carry their own skis from the beginning! The convenience of the place once you get there is probably more important than the flight and transfer times. Getting on a ski bus with two littlies and all their gear is not much fun, especially if it's full and you have to stand.

pollyanna, Take your kids out of schol at the end of January and do a last minute booking with a company specialising in kids e.g Esprit. Esprit do very good late deals and if you speak to them they will tell you what the mix of guests is in the chalet.

one other thing. There's been snow (though it's entirely possible it will all disappear before Christmas, it's too early to get excited) so the vacancies at Christmas are filling up fast. Best book asap.
