Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Which resort for 23rd-25th - Close to Salzburg

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Good evening fellow snowheads,

I've just booked myself and the non-skiing (not yet anyway) other half some cheap flights to Salzburg next weekend to try and take advantage of all this white stuff.

Now I'm stuck. I've never been to Austria before, so I have no idea what any of the resorts are like. I've got a list of all the resorts close to Salzburg from the snow reports section, but I don't know anything about them.

So, can anyone recommend somewhere please. We need a resort that won't scare the GF witless so she'll hopefully get the bug and come again, so somewhere with some nice wide gentle runs would be nice, but also enough to keep me interested.

....also it'll need some snow!....and it'll need to be cheap(ish)....and have some charm (maybe)..

Also, whats the cheapest way of getting to resort, are any of the resorts close to Salzburg directly served by trains?

Any Ideas??

cheers in advance,
Richard.

joydivision, I used these people in March to get to Obertauern http://www.reisen-habersatter.at/transfer-en.php
They were waiting at the airport for the flight and take you straight to your hotel. Very good service. They go to a few other places as well.
Hamish
forgot to mention - Obertauern has some nice wide slopes, and is easy to get to and snow-sure.
Not exactly charming in the manner of a typical Austrian village, but it's not bad at all.

Cheers guys, Looks like my sister and her fella may be tagging along now, so i may have a bit more organising to do than I had planned!

Hamish, I have actually just been looking at Obertauern as it seems a bit higher than the other resorts and their website seems to indicate that they have 25% discount on the lift passes at the moment....good snow levels too 190/130!

Elizabeth B, I presume you mean djflectcher...he has already offered his services in the snow reports thread.

dianae, Cheers, I'll look into that. Is the train station actually in the report or will a taxi ride be in order?

Whitegold, Thanks for the recommendation....delivered in true whitegold style! wink ....I'll take a look.

Elizabeth B, here I am - Ive been in Zauchensee all day - beautiful - I will post pics in a mo!

joydivision, as others have suggested - you need to come to Ski Amade. Resorts open in this area are Zauchensee, Flachau, Schladming. I have just spent the day at Zauchensee where there is a lovely lovely long wide blue perfect for everyone with off piste bits everywhere and it was empty. Definatley a must. Off to Flachau tomorrow or sunday. Flachau also has a lovely blue run. Schaldming is all reds - or at least reds to get to the blues.

Your transport options are train to Radstadt or Schaldming €11 single plus bus fare to the train station in Salzburg, taxi transfer at €40pp return but Im not sure if they are running yet - or - hire a car. As there is 4 of you it might be better to hire a car so you can get to all the places that are open.

As for snow - we have loads of it and I mean loads. Ignore all comments about height - we have snow and thats what you need.

Let me know if you need more info. Very Happy

joydivision, also, its party weekend in Flachau next weekend - all the bars/clubs are open for a pre-season bash giving all the hoteliers a chance to get out. We went last year and it was fab. Have a look at www.flachau.com for accommodation and info. Very Happy

I thought I'd better update this as some of you had taken the time out to reply. I didn't have time to last week as I was busy getting a weeks work done in 4 days and making the final prepartions for the trip.

We finally decided on Obertauren as it seemed to be the highest resort in the area that was fully open and we didn;t want to be boarding in the rain which was forecast for lower levels.

The trip went really well, after flying out from Coventry early on Friday Morning, we landed at Salzburg 20mins early and were met by the guys from the transfer company that Hamish recommended. we were on the road before our plane was due to land!

Finally arrived in Obertaurn at about 11:30ish, quickly got changed and picked up a hire board for the misses and proceeded for have a full 2 1/2days on the slopes. Very Happy Very Happy

It was dumping down with snow by the time the taxi picked us up at 17:30 on Sunday evening and it looks like Obertuaern is set for a decent season.

Will defo be trying this again later in the season snowHead

I would just like to inform all snowheads that my wife is flangesax most/all of the time - hence her reference to "I have just spent the day at Zauchensee where there is a lovely lovely long wide blue perfect for everyone with off piste bits everywhere and it was empty." - There were also a lot of nice red and worldcup runs to appreciate !!!
