Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Laser Eye Surgery and skiing

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I'm considering LASIK to correct short sight.

Has anyone else had this? Have you had any trouble skiing afterwards? I understand altitude can be a problem.

I've read differing reports of how much time one needs to leave before running, cycling, skiing etc as well, so any real life experiences will be gratefully read!

snow_rat, I was a guinea pig for the first laser correction of extreme short sight and astigmatism at St Thomas's about ten years ago.
It was the version where they remove the skin from your eye ball and then let it re-generate rather than peeling it back.
Overall, very little problem with it except a tendency towards occasional gritty dry eyes at night at altitude (cured by eye drops).
Despite the very minor risks it was successful beyond all expectation.

It's always worried me this although I've considered it, I don't like the idea of someone operating on my eyes.

I had LASIK 4 years ago. No problems skiing/at altitude, and I am loving being able to see everything, and be frivolous and buy new sunnies/goggles whenever I want without having to have dullity dull prescription ones.

I never even knew there was a potential altitude risk when I had mine done, and I thought I had researched pretty thoroughly.

Have it done at the end of the ski season, so your eyes have months to recover.

I've thought about this.
First, it may be true (we don't know) that more opticians with bad eyesight use laser to correct it than use glasses.
Second, it may be true that opticians want to sell you glasses, and would be under moral or commercial pressure to 'lead the way'.
Finally, I can imagine that there may be opticians who sit below a 'braveness' threshold required to let yourself be strapped down and zapped, regardless of the fact that they may objectively know it is a good idea. In fact, if you have a high appetite for risk are you more or less likely to make that choice of career as against, say, fighter pilot.

I don't know the answer, perhaps I should be sponsored to research it Smile

If you have bad eyesight perhaps optician is a career you are more inclined towards than fighter pilot for which it is a definite barrier to entry.

Although Fighter Pilots wouldn't be able to have it done and continue to fly. Think it's still a no for the CAA until the long term effects are understood.

So, if you might also be considering learning to fly at any time in the future, check this paper out .

I was wrong - seems you can get a Class 2 medical
http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/49/SRG_MED_JARClass2InitialVisStds[538].pdf

Certification can be considered six months after LASEK/PRK for myopia (provided an assessment is
carried out at three months post-operatively). Certification is usually possible one year
after other types of operation. Please note that:
• the pre-operative refraction must not have exceeded +5 to -8
• an assessment by an eye specialist will be required.
• stability of refraction must be achieved. To show this you will need to
obtain a report showing your refraction about a month before your medical
exam.
• you must have no problems with glare.

JT, I did a bit of research before I had mine done, and whilst it is still felt to be a 'relatively new' procedure, it's actually been around since the 70s. I know that's not like saying that it's been around a hundred years, but I would think there are actually lots of treatments that are eyed with a lot less suspicion, that haven't been around half as long.

Still, I can see both sides (or at least I can with my new eyes!), it's still elective surgery for something that is essentially for cosmetic and practical reasons rather than for improvement in general health. I am also very suspicious of how it's turned into such big business and am sure there are some unscrupulous operators out there.

Still, loving my 20/20 vision!

Thanks all (even Whitegold, maybe, as I'm a contacts wearer) for your comments and advice so far.

I'm only considering it as I've recently started having problems with contacts, after 20+ years of finding them brilliant, and it's meant I'm struggling at work. I wouldn't be surprised if I'm not suitable for it. Also my eyesight is quite bad, so I'd be unlikely to get 20/20.

But I'm willing to give it a go if it might improve my situation, AS LONG AS the risk to my severe skiing habit is very small!

I disagree.

Short-sightedness is harmful to health.

First. myopia makes the world appear blurrier, duller and greyer.

Second, it causes low self-esteem.

Third, humans view nearsightedness as an illness. As the old saying goes -- women don't make passes at men in glasses.

All these factors cause a subconscious depressive effect.

Getting your eyes zinged -- if you are in the lucky 50% to 80% who have no post-op problems -- will cure all the above.
