Lizzard, yes, I'm a phone-cash-buff-off kinda guy. Just that reading the topics on here you get the impression that some people have all of that stuff (and more because I forgot lip salve, cream, wipes, kendal mint cake, leatherman, spare lenses, ski lock, ski sling, mojo etc). No wonder they have probs with airline baggage restrictions.

Bode Swiller, And I was beginning to think it was just me who marvelled at the amount of garbage people take with them....

Bode dont be too hard on everyone its just that most folks in Europe are as far from their snow fix as they get, and I guess that even chatting about lip salve is better than working.

Not me Sir. Last time I went skiing my suitcase weighed in at something like 13-15kgs.

Bode Swiller, how can you be bothered with all that kit and faff!
I'm more the abridged version :
skis - yep i'm clipped in
boots - sorted in the lift
poles - straps on
rucksack - all clipped up
goggles - on
Check for anyone on near that might threaten my survival, go.

One of those multi-tool thingies.

I have a similar device, but not the rather expensive actual leatherman.

Nope. I invariably check everything just before the first lift but either after I've left the chalet and got on the bus or are driving to the lifts. Very embarrassing. I've been seen skiing with my hands in my pockets due to forgotten gloves.

I've just look up an avalung - yes, I can see the theory, but in an avalanche aren't you likely to have that much snow pressing on your rib cage to be physically able to breath?

PisteHead, they're useful when you need a pair of pliers. The rest of the time a basic Swiss Army knife would do.
They're no use at all when you can't remember where you put them, however.

Bode Swiller, you forgot sun tan cream and lip salve ... and did you remember the 1:25,000 map (actually very useful if you want to try a new off-piste route, perhaps through some trees)

Bode Swiller, well if I could interest you in my new invaluable skiing device, on sale near a ski lift next season, it's a Norikson Skiman. It combines a 3MP camera, 27.5GB MP3 player, GPS tracker, altitude, and data logger, blackberry E-mail, with a hi bandwith communication device, and all packaged into a folding multi-purpose, red with a little white cross, tool holder that extends to include a probe and binding attachment crosshead checking device.

Megamum, if you had been to helinick´s talk at the EoSB you would have learned that many deaths in avalanche burials are apparently due to the exhaled CO2 being unable to escape from the vicinity of the victim´s nose and mouth and thus asphyxiating the buried person.
