Poster: A snowHead

I am heading out to canada this winter for the season and need some decent thermals as i feel the cold. The two makes i have been considering are Icebreaker and Skins. I was wondering what your opinions are on the makes and if you can recommend any others.

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

I'd go with a selection of layers so you can mix and match. Don't just rely on thermals.
I have some Icebreaker base layers which I find good but I tend to keep for best. They seem to hole easily.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

We have spent the last 3 years in North America. Gets cold but NOT a damp cold so keeping warm is pretty easy. We use a combination of Icebreakers and loose fitting Burton AK thermals (nice and cosy)

Skins very pricey
I have bought a Skins top for my eldest for Christmas, on the basis that he can also wear/will find useful for his main sport of hockey. I'm interested to see how he gets on.

Peter Storm thermal tops from Millets have served us well, skiing in Pila @ Christmas (which gets no sunshine at all then) and rowing on a cold winters morning. Just as effective a first layer as my HH Merino top - IMO.

I use Canterbury when playing rugby and also find them excellent when skiing.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Whatever the make, it has to be merino.
