Anyone ever done an Easter skiing trip in the US followed by Disneyland?
Kids are really keen to go, and the missus suggested not skiing next year and going to Disney instead!
No way was my reaction, so I wondered about combing the two?

kitenski, maybe send the missus and kids to Disneyland, while you go skiing? Or if that won't wash, take them to Paris for a coupla days on a separate occasion. We did the Florida place many years ago, and the kids enjoyed it but we were passing through. No way would I cross an ocean at my own expense to go to Disneyworld.

I've been to Disneyland in Anaheim (but not combined with skiing), would have thought it would be easier to combine there with somewhere like Lake Tahoe than try for Florida.

When we were there it was certainly busy. I hate crowds. We were waiting in the queue to go in when youngest (who was 5) asked in his piping treble why "American people have their names on their shoes, and why are most of them called Nike". It was very wet - we kept getting thunderstormed on. They were desperate to go on "Pirates of the Caribbean" as we were living in the Caribbean at the time and, as luck would have it, a huge downpour started when we were on the ride. When we got to the beginning there was no queue, and it was too wet to go out and queue for anything else, so we went round that ride 3 times. The boys loved it to bits, but they weren't too bothered about anything else. They preferred "Sea World". I know the performing dolphins and killer whales are not very PC but they adored them and spent all their pocket money on soft cuddly versions who subsequently had loads of adventures in the garden.
I found the whole Disney thing fascinating, in a horrible sort of way. Especially the spectacle of grown men (all fat) who had no doubt been driving real cars since they were 17, squeezing themselves into little cars which ran on tracks and which my 7 year old managed unaided.
The most gobsmacking thing of all was that some people appeared to be there Without Children. WTF?

No, but in 15 days did a DIY trip which featured: New York, San Francisco, six days ski at Lake Tahoe resorts, Los Angeles (inc trips to San Diego & Tijuana, Mexico) and Las Vegas. Hardly unpacked our bags between hotels but a totally amazing time - felt like we'd been away months.
Las Vegas (theme park type rides galore) & Utah ski are close enough (by plane) to be easily do-able if you want a bit more of a relaxing hol.

I've been to Disneyland in LA a couple of times, although not while on a ski trip. There are a few small resorts within driving distance of LA, but I think the larger resorts in California are probably easier to fly to than drive. If you're going to take the kids on a theme park holiday I'd say head to Orlando outside of the winter and not compromise a ski trip. We've been a few times and enjoyed it, although wouldn't want to let it get in the way of skiing.

just as an FYI i believe that there are direct flights from LAX to Vail and Orange County to SLC

kitenski, We stayed outside Disneyland Paris last summer, en route to the Alps, and trained in to the Park for a day. The boys loved it (it was a surprise for them and the look on their faces as the train pulled into Disney station was worth all the planning!) but a day was enough. If you drive to France for skiing, would a day or two added at one end of the holiday or the other, suffice? We could recommend the hotel we stayed in (more like a s/c apartment) and the train took less than 15 minutes.

Disneyland Florida is better than the LA one. I'm all for the alps and quiet getaways but Disney is something quite 'unusual'. I don't think people should be snooty about it - it's bl**dy brilliant!!

kitenski, when the kids were little, we skied in Mammoth at the end of April and then travelled round California for a week or so. We didn't visit Disneyland, but we could have done. Mammoth is a pleasant day's drive from LA. We went on to Yosemite and then down to the coast and back to LA. One of our best hols, and we could easily have stuck Disneyland on to the beginning or end if we wanted to.
There are other amusement parks in the LA area which are said to better than Disneyland. FWIW, we went to Disneyland Paris (which I daresay is a pale reflection of the US versions) a few years later, when the kids were about 6; they enjoyed it as an amusement park but didn't get the whole Disney thing. My daughter could not understand why people would queue up for an autograph from or wish to have breakfast with someone dressed in a Mickey Mouse costume, and I could offer her no explanation.

I did a similar trip, LA to Vegas to Mammoth then back to LA. We were in Anaheim opposite gates to DW (though we didn't go in - bit too mickey mouse for my liking  ). It's a good 6 hour drive from LA to Mammoth.

Can be done a few different ways:
1) Go for the bragging right of having been to the "original" Disney in LA, combined with skiing Mammoth. A leasurely day of driving between the two. Can add a small detour to one of the desert parks (Jashua Tree, Death Valley, Palm Spring) Easter should be fine weather for both skiing and sight-seeing.
2) Florida Disney is newer, bigger and all around better. Fly to Denver or SLC afterwards for your skiing fix.
3) Paris as a side trip when skiing the Alps.

WTF? I like it. So did my boy friend. So we went there no children, more than once! I had a "un-limited" pass for a year when I worked in Florida.
