Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Alternative to Gotama

Ok here is the deal.

Im not sure I will add a ski this year but the ski that has been sitting on top of my list to get is the Gotama.

Im a heavy and tall skier 110kg/230lbs and 191cm/6'4'' and this ski is ment to be my powder and trees ski. Ive been sking Völkls for quite some time and my pist ski is the G31 and my allround ski is the Karma. I will be skiing 5 weeks in Fernie this year.

There has been little doubt before that the Gotama is the ski I want but Im starting to question it. Partially because there are so many "new brands" on the market and Im also not that fuzzy about how K2/Völkl/Marker/Technica moved production to China.

Traditionally Ive gone for stability in skis as Im heavy and I lilke speed. But thing is I enjoy the trees soooo much. Stiff speed stable skis dont do well in trees. Ive also gone for quite little side cut as I come from oldschool 80s austrian skischool background. My natural stands is quit tight with the knees and Ive been working the skis quite hard. During last season when I got my Karma (part of plan with that ski was to have it as a transition ski to more modern sking) Ive widened my stands a bit and gotten my feet out from under my body and not cutting off the turns by stepping into the skis. I look less like an old dude now.. Wink

So what I want now is a fatter ski (new mantra 96 waist is a minimum) that encourages my development into a more modern skier, is nimble in the trees but doesnt poo-poo it self when it gets steep. Pist isnt a priority but at least decent pist characterisitcs is a plus as the transition between the tree/offpist runs shouldnt be horrible. Edge grip should be quite good enough to do hard packed steep offpist runs.

So a fatty that is nimble in trees, can handle the big stuff and doesnt shame it self in the pist.

Currently what Ive been looking at is.

*Gotama
*Scott P4 - Is it too soft for my weight?
*Goodha 114 - New ski for the year so its quite hard to tell... Goodha´s are good bang per buck alternative http://www.freeride.eu/review/view.php?id=4019
*Amplid Royal Teddy

Plesae help me add stuff to the list and or remove stuff from the list. Any brand goes.

Sorry to pimp my own product on here tex but I'd love to get you on a pair of Icelantic Shamans in 173.

http://www.powdermag.com/buyersguide08/indie/icelantic-shaman/index.html

The dims are 173 length, Tip 160mm, Waist 110mm, Tail 130mm. These skis were designed to be skied in trees (tight). They're picking up fantastic reviews and worth a look at. I tested them in Val Thorens in April and although they're a pow/tree ski they handle remarkably on piste so although I wouldn't class them as a one quiver ski they won't punish you on piste.

The onther one is the High Society FR in 187 with a 104mm waist. Powerfull ski and a direct competitor with the Gotama and P4. I'm sure there are some good review about them on here.

I was lookin at the High Society FR but they got quite bad reviews in the swedish Åka Skidor magazine, all reviewers called em unresponsive and dead. Hence they are off the list.

Never heared of the Icelantic but I will look at em.. 173 is extreamly short though...

Fischer Watea 192cm 134-101-124 or maybe Fischer Atua 186cm 129-96-119

Watea 192cm 134-101-124

I love this ski. On paper I had totally dismissed it but on snow it’s awesome. Sort-of twin tip, wood core, relatively light, carves, pops, does it all. I could not believe this was a 101mm waist ski, it’s the most playful 99+ ski I’ve ever been on (Sugar, Gotama, m103). It has a moderate and even flex that absorbs chunks needed but also springs energy back. The whole ski felt like a sweet spot. In the bumps I was popping off every third mogul and on the groomers laying down smooth, clean carves. I thought the sidecut would be too much but along with the flex it works for you, it grips hard snow but doesn’t seem to over-hook, I could slide the tails on steeper stuff if I needed to. Looking back this ski has the same dimensions as the Seth Pistol +6mm, which is odd because I hated the first generation Pistol. I also noticed the Watea is 1mm bigger throughout versus the Rossi Squad 91. I’m going to pick-up a pair of these for my everyday boards next year.

Thats a shame the FRs have had those reviews in Sweden. The reviews they've had here and in the US has been the oposite to that. Heres a review from our very own admin.
http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?p=630114#630114

Interestingly a batch (demo batch) came over from the US to sweden and the UK edge high which is where the bad reviews come from. I've spoken to HSFC about this.

Spyderjon gave the 179's he's got a full tune and was blown away by the performance. Shame the factory didn't check this first. If you're ever in Val Thorens or the UK, I'd be more than happy to meet you with a tuned pair of FRs so you can see for yourself that they're not an unresponsive or dead ski.

The Icelantic skis feel a lot longer than they are are. Worth a try if you're looking for a tree ski.

I looked at their site looks very interesting... still beeing such a strange ski I need more info... what size are you? Do you have any references to reviews written by a heavier skier?

Also I dont see the 173 option on their web page just the 161.

What price range are we talkin about here?

I'm 17st and 6.1. I ride the 168 Nomad and truly love the things.

The skis on the Icelantic site are 06/07. I've got a link to the 08 catalog but until I get home tonight can't get to it.

the Gotamas I have skied weren't stiff at all. Not noodly by any means but certainly softer than Legend Pros (considerably softer) and Blizzard Titan 9s (both of which I own). They have changed the sidecut over the last couple of seasons which I expect makes them a bit more carveable. I really like the Gots - they are a leading candidate for when the time comes to replace the LPs - although they will probably be going strong for a few seasons yet! In fact, if you took the Gotama from a couple of years ago (the all black ones) and replaced the twin tip with a small kick tail (like on the Legend Pros) you'd probably have my ideal soft/variable snow ski. I am too fat and lazy to really enjoy the LPs in trees, but the Gots are a bit more forgiving

Arno, That is exactly the reason I have the Gots on my list. A few years ago I would have gone for the LPs but I dont want that stiff skis anymore (except for pure pist skis). I also know the Gots arnt really carvable in the pist but the karma is amy allround ski so it doesnt matter.

Question though is Scott P4 or Gotama? Is the P4 much softer and much worse in higher speeds then the Gotama? I really feel tempted with the cut of the P4.

kiwi1, They seriously look like a interesting ski. Ive read some reviews on www.tetongravity.com and they seem to like em. You beeing 17 stones (107kg correct?) is interesting and a suppricing sign that they can handle us heavier dudes...

TexMurphy, Yeah I'm not just saying they are great because I distribute them. One of the best things about the brand is watch people take them away to test after having them say they're too short then watching them come back with big grins and saying "I understand now" You really have to ski them to believe them.

Anyone know anything and would it be worth considering?

Can anyone compare em to Gotama and/or Scott P4?

 You know it makes sense.
You know it makes sense.
TexMurphy, I own the P4s and, although I have never skied the Gotamas, I know that its tips and particularly the tails are a bit softer than the Volkls.

I don't know if this is a factor for you, but the 181cm P4 is almost 400 grammes heavier than the 183 Gotama, so when looking at the appropriate lengths for you (i.e. the 191 P4 and 190 Gotama), the P4 would be about a pound heavier per ski.

mass is not a factor... at least not a major one... the few times I hike Ill carry a heavier ski if its a ski I enjoy more...

TexMurphy, Refering to Black Crows. It's a new brand developed here in Cham and made in Italy( i wonder where! Cool ) They were the talk of the town last year and have many of the local Gotama riders hanging up their Volkls ready to jump ship this year. I'm having to call stenley to myself to not add a pair to my quiver. I have skied them, i prefer it to the Gotama, on the pise they make good use of their dual sidecut with a short but stable running length, off the piste, a breeze. So they're cool and i'm not sure you'll see too many outside of Cham for a couple of years, Kudos! Cool
