Hi,
I am looking at booking a week in Val Thorens on the 12th January for between 4 and 6 people. The only thing is the package I want to get is just flights + hotel and does not include transfers. So does anyone know the best way to get there? Hiring a car seems expensive considering we would only use it to drive to the resort and then back to the airport, can we hitch a lift on a coach somehow?

troublemaker, you could book a coach transfer. Try http://www.alpski-bus.com/ for prices. If you can all get into one car you might find it is slightly cheaper to hire rather than pay for a transfer.

I think you might be right about the car actually. I just checked the avis website and you can get something basic like a fiesta for £140 for the week which is less than I thought. That should be ok if there are only 4 of us going (although it might be a bit of a squeeze with all out kit!) Cheers.

troublemaker, if you're hiring a car you should try this discount code for Holiday Autos car rental from Geneva. Most people prefer to hire from the Swiss side rather than the French side, and if you do this don't pay extra for winter equipment (winter tyres and chains) as these will almost certainly be fitted to the car. You could also try ebookers.com and travelsupermartket.com for quotes for car hire.

Don't forget to factor in the cost of any car parking charges you may incur!!!
I believe that in VT you will have to park in one of the allocated payable car parks if your accommodation doesn't have a garage.

There's at least one free car park in VT, at the bottom of the resort. Other car parks do charge, with parking around the resort seems to be tightly controlled. Cars are likely to be towed if they park where they shouldn't. If you park in the free car park and it snows heavily you'll probably have to obtain a shovel from somewhere. Covered parking can be a useful thing to have

troublemaker, there are a good number of people offering minibus transfers, you can get picked up from the airport on arrival and dropped off at the door of your accommodation. We have used John at www.3vt.co.uk several times, and he runs a great service. He specialises in 'les trois vallees' and runs a good fleet of vehicles. It is not your cheapest option but it is nice not to have to think about directions, driving on the wrong side of the road, chains etc. Worth considering.

I also used 3VT without any problems. But if hiring a car is the cheapest option don't be too concerned about directions, driving there, road clearance, etc. It's a fairly straightforward journey from Geneva to the Trois Vallees (especially if you hire from the Swiss side of the airport), and the roads are kept well cleared so you'd only need to fit chains for the final part of the drive if it was snowing heavily at the time. Having a car in resort also gives you the option of a day-trip somewhere else (some resorts are included on your 3V liftpass) as well as driving down the valley for cheaper grocery shopping.

troublemaker, we rented two cars from grenoble to La Plagne in Jan, which came to under £300 for a clio and a VW Touran TDi MPV. The Touran was about £170 through www.europcar.com. Woudl be big enough for 4/6 including gear, but might be a squeeze if there are six of you.
