Hello Snowheads,
Another season begins (for us anyway), and here I am again asking questions of you knowledgeable (or at least opinionated!) folk. This time I want to know where and when you found fabulous snow last season - we know there was some out there, and I don't just mean Whistler...
Cheers,
Hannah from Fall-Line Skiing

Verbier, the weekend of 9-10 december.
Totally fabulous powder on the bottom half of the mountain, we were the only ones skiing it as all the others were in big queue for the funispace to go up high.
We just lapped the Ruinettes-Medran in knee-thigh deep powdery powder, without a minute lost to queues.

believe it or not the best snow was opening day in Mottaret. The resort had a big dump on the friday night before opening day and couldnt open until sunday. No one on the the piste and 30 cm of fresh everywhere. no off piste skiing but on piste the snow was ungroomed and perfect....

Han, Verbier third week in March. Also pretty good - given the poor start to the European season - Zermatt last week in January.

Marmot Basin (Jasper, Alberta, Canada)
New Year (although the whole season from the beginnning of December to April was just great by the looks of reports)
Skied in knee deep powder on most days - brilliant
But then the snow's always been great for us there!

Tignes late January. Twas bluddy cold tho!
And altho the snow itself wasn't remarkable I was amazed to be able to ski back to resort in La Thuile on 17th April, despite what was allegedly a rubbish season. Also narrowly avoided a small avalanche same place same day.

Thank you people! You are brilliant.
Keep an eye out for the new issue of Fall-Line, out on the 21st of September.
At least if we are denied a summer, we might as well look forward to winter.
Cheers, Hannah

25th January - around the border of Austria/Slovenia/Italy
continuous snowing for two days
Kanin (Slovenia) 120 cm
Kranjska Gora (Slovenia) 90 cm
Nassfeld (Austria) 120 cm
Heiligenblut (Austria) 100 cm
Bad Kleinkirchheim (Austria) 100 cm
This huge dump saved the whole season there.

Bad Hofgastein, Austria in March....same week as the Wengen week....absolutely stunning!! For some reason the Austrians don't seem to like skiing when it's snowing...crowd free slopes, thigh deep snow, what could be more perfect?

Val D'Isere in April was excellent. Most of the classic off piste routes were skiable including the superb Combe Vallon.
St Anton and particularly Zurs was very good in March.
The Lakes and Pennines however were particularly poor, despite having the first lift served skiing in Europe last November

Early-Dec, late-Jan, late-Feb and mid-Mar were when the snow fell.
Mid-Mar was easily the best period.
Southwest Switzerland (e.g. Zermatt) and the Northern French Alps (e.g. La Plagne) had the best overall season. Andorra had the worst.

It seems the answer is "wherever I skied in March". For me that meant Sattel-Hochstuckli. Practically the first time they had been open that season.
