For an early start to the season, can anyone recommend a resort for the first half of December where snow is usually reliable, ideally flying to Geneva.

... or Val Thorens, or Avoriaz or Flaine if you want a shorter transfer.
However, the usual mantra for 1st half December is that everywhere will be quiet, so why not wait and see where the snow's best at the time? It's not unheard of for the low grassy pastures of Gets and Morzine, for example, to be better than the higher, rockier resorts.

I'd book a flight to Geneva and then decide where nearer time. Why are you not considering Swiss resorts eg in particular, Zermatt. I think you'll be able to have a good choice of apartments, catered chalets or hotels, in a variety of resorts, at that time of year.

dan100, good point, i have a flight booked already and maybe a trip to Zermatt is the right option (having already been to Tignes a few times before)

Tignes, Val d'Isere and Val Thorens have consistently had the best early-season conditions in the Alps for many years.
They typically have above-average snow coverage in Dec.

Saas Fee is the other side of the valley from zermatt and for a week skiing it tops Zermat. In my opinion!

handyman - as much as I love the area, Avoriaz doesn't officially open until 15 December - so even if there's snow before then there may not be any lifts running. If the area has good snow before then, then it may open at weekends (Les Gets usually manages to get something open the first week of December), but it's no basis on which to base a holiday. (I do agree with brian that altitude isn't everything - grass is skiable more quickly than scree.)
I'm pretty sure Flaine would be the same.
Tignes, LDA or Val Thorens would be my choice.

PhillipStanton, In the last 5 winters - Avoriaz has opened early on I think 2/3 occasions. In 2005/2006 they opened on 25th November and then stayed open. handyman, I would wait to see where the snow is beofre you decide on resort as brian, says you can get better skiing in grassy resorts if they get good early snow. Avoriaz needs +50cm to cover the rocks - Morzine/Les Gets only needs about 15/20cm!!

Early season in 2004/05 was terrible, in 2005/06 was amazing and 2006/07 was errrible. Does that trend mean it will be amazing again this year!!!
