I've got quite a bad case of DOMS today (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness), after my work out yesterday. I warmed up and warmed down properly, and did stretches at the end.
Up to now, I've always felt that DOMS is a good thing, a sign that you've pushed yourself hard enough to encourage muscle hypertrophy, but the thing is that today I've felt terrible, with loss of appetite, a lot of soreness, and also feeling extremely tired. Does anyone else get this?

When I was an unfit non exercising chain smoker and first started going to the gym.... Since becoming the epitome of fitness it's rarely a problem

Depends what I've been doing. Ran the 5km at Balmorel this year with little or no training (for running), managed it in 25 mins, but could hardly walk next day, or for 3 more days due to muscle pain. Had to stick to roller skiing or biking the rest of the week. I managed to ski 10km and bike 16km the next day when I could hardly walk though. I've been trying to do a bit more running , but don't really enjoy it compared to the cycling or skiing. Ran 11.6km followed by a 17 mile cycle in late june and had less after effects than the 5km run so the training must be having some effect. At the weekend I skiied 15miles in just over 1hr with little or no aftereffects so hopefully I'm getting better from the training. However if I get a lot of muscle soreness next day I reckon I've done something wrong, either done too much or not warmed up or down properly.

riverman, I do. Sundays and Thursdays. I've cancelled mountain biking this evening, will see how I feel tomorrow. Generally I'm pretty good about not over training.

kitenski, it's only in the muscles that I exercised yesterday (back and biceps), not all over my body.

Kramer, I find changing the rest days helps to stop the body knowing when to feel tired.

Kramer, Listen to your body, just because your brain has a schedule doesn't mean it's the same one your body has. Diet, work, love-life, minor illnesses, medication . . . all sorts of things have an effect on the body and its timing that the brain can tend to ignore . . .
. . . you should know this
Take a break from your regular regime and do something entirely different . . . like a Salsa class or two.

Played 2 hours of badminton last night, having not played since the end of last season and am as stiff as a board today. Suffer with DOMS quite a lot after using weights in the gym as well despite good warm up and stretch after. I was told that it was a sign of dehydration but I'm not convinced. If you find a cure please let me know!

The Muscle soreness part seems "normal" from the exercise. The other doesn't.
Maybe you need to take a week off from exercise?

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Sounds like you're over-training. As ABC says DOMS is normal if you're pushing yourself, but the others are signs of over-training.

After a days sleep I feel much better. I slept for sixteen hours yesterday. I think that I probably must have overdone it a bit.

Kramer, did you not take the opportunity to try out some ice baths?

veeeight,
And the latest scientific research says they don't work. Study found similar or more reported aches and pains in the athletes who took the ice bath compared to the athletes who didn't.
I'd have thought it was quiet a difficult study as the reporting of aches and pains must be very subjective.
