Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Russia signs Kyoto: one step towards global cooling?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
After years of deadlock - it only becomes legally binding when countries responsible for over 55% of carbon emissions sign it - the Russian government today ratified the Kyoto Protocol.

This may mark the way forward in stabilising the temperature of the atmosphere, though the USA and Australia have refused to sign it and China is not required to do so, since it is classed as a developing nation.

Can the ski community breathe any easier for future generations of skiers? This BBC report raises doubts:

Quote:
"BBC science analyst Tracey Logan notes that many experts believe that Kyoto will be largely ineffective as the world's two biggest emitters, the US and China, will not cut their outputs."

At least China has signed up, even if they don't have to cut back because of their developing nation status, the US is the single largest poluter in the world with estimates ranging between 35% and 45% of the worlds greenhouse gasses coming from there.

I'd like to think that the recent massive storm damage inflicted on the US is mother natures way of getting her own back, but I know that's just my vivid imagination Cool

The French still have a different approach. Much of the world may have to go the same way, with China and India growing their economies, if Carbon emissions are to be kept under control.

Anyone know what has happened about the Scottish power station?

This doesn't make them one of the good guys!

Push your commercial competitors into a more expensive system when you don't have to comply yourself? Especially when you are one of the worst polluters.

john wells, Chinas willingness to sign up may well in part be a commercial decision but they have agreed to abide by the decisions of the Kyoto agreement and no pressure was put on them to sign up to it.

The US on the other hand has shown repeatedly that it does not care a damn about any country other than itself, if it had a better attitude towards others then maybe there would not be the accusations flying arround as to just why it went to war in Iraq, having a President who is actively supported by the oil companies does not help the image either. The only differencethis will make will be to the russian economy. As we're getting all political here let's go with it. Kyoto has nothing to do with glodal warming (a dubious concept at best) and everything to do with third world, dysfunctional regimes attempting to hamstring industrialised nations. The science upon which Kyoto is based has been trashed by five peer reviews, it is a scam and in fact one of the great scientific frauds of any era.

You can read about it here:

Most scientists who actually know about climate are sceptics. The whole debate has been hijacked by a few thousand ideologues and sycophants who, because of the intensely politicised nature of the claim (it fingers capitalism and particularly the US as the villains hell-bent on destroying the planet) have ensured that no-one gets a research grant unless they come up with conclusions that support the one true faith of man-made climate change and impending catastrophe.

I have lots more on this if anyone's interested.

And how many peer reviews have supported that science?

4thefunofit, the problem is that whilst the scientists virtualy all agree that the earth is warming up, they cannot agree on what part man plays in the warm up. However places with low lying land areas are undoubtedly threatend by a global rise in sea level caused by the global warming, more importantly perhaps to snowheads are the effects global warming will have on snow conditions the world over

Neither is there concensus that, even supposing it works, Kyoto-type medicine is not worse than the climate change disease.

None I know of. Details of the peer reviews can befound here:

I'll get a hang of the hyper link thingy one day.

By the way, it turns out that Russia, by signing up to the Kyoto Accord, will not be obliged to reduce carbon emissions and can even trade carbon credits. Politics is all in Kyoto, no the environment.
