Quick question about bindings. Any time that I've hired skis the rear/heel bit of the binding has been the bit they've adjusted to make the boot fit. When I took my son to a well known establishment today the bloke could not get the heel bit of the binding to shift so he whacked it a couple of times with his screw driver, when it still wouldn't move he adjusted the toe portion instead. Is this usual? more importantly is it safe?

I've seen both done. Can't say if it is good practice or not, but it's not unusual.

ickabodblue, if that bit of the binding is screwed, makes you wonder about the rest...

ickabodblue,
Don't like the idea of that. Both ends should be adjustable not just one end to make the boot fit... what about the other ski?
Depending on the size on the boot you'll be making a forward bias or rear bias mounting point but more importantly, if that is the state of the binding, what else has been overlooked? Seems like a binding service is lacking, IMV.

I'm with JT on this one. If any part of a binding seized, it would either go in the bin or be serviced so it wasn't seized.

Assuming we're talking about rental bindings here I'm only familiar with the Salomon range but most of those, in common with many (most?) retail bindings, do not have a readily adjustable toe piece. Without looking at the books I recall that only the Synchro Centre would have adjustable heel and toe pieces and if the binding in question was one of those then both ends could and should have been adjusted as necessary.

Most if not all rental bindings at my dry local slope only adjust at the rear. Dry slope rental bindings are more prone to getting bunged up with grit & dirt etc. and I imagine require more maintenance (WD40 seems popular) than those used on indoor snow.

david@mediacopy, It was actually indoor snow we were skiing on. The place hasn't been open for that long so I was surprised at the state of the equipment. The first pair of skis he was given wouldn't stay on at all and they didn't have any other 120's which were functional so he had to take 110's - ok that's not a problem from the skiing point of view but the place isn't cheap so I wouldn't have expected to have to compromise.

Forgot to add it was really quiet at the time so it's not as if they had a real run on small skiis

ickabodblue, I assume that you are talking about an establishment adjacent to the Clyde. I am a beginner but I noticed the last tim that I was there that the rental skis were shocking nothing to do with the bindings just rubbish. I'm going to use your experience to further justify buying myself skis.

ianmacd, Glad to be of service. Seriously though I was in Tiso at the weekend getting some camping gear and couldn't resist a look in Blues and the bloke there said what's left of this seasons skiis will be heavily discounted at the end of August. Or there are always some really nice Elans from Snowheads

ickabodblue, sounds really dogey, i would be seeking a second opinion, but i would avoid the royal alexadra at present you skis may get blown up in a controled explosion [ which may actually release the seized part ]

About time, I don't know why they don't approach the local ski clubs and offer them a discount. It would bring in far more punters.
