Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

As Elizabeth B, says definitely head to a glacier. Our resort of choice for the early season trip is usually Tignes, though we did go to Solden early last winter and enjoyed it. Probably be back to Tignes this year, our early trip is usually first weekish of December. Just don't expect a resort to be fully open, it's always what you make of it that early. snowHead

gwaelod, Grand Montets(Argentiere, Chamonix) are usually open at this time of year, weather permitting. It can often be just weekends, so i'd recommend booking flights to Geneva now and think about exact location closer the time.

SMALLZOOKEEPER, is right, get your flights sorted a.s.a.p. if the price is right. Then pick your resort as close to leaving as you like, follow the snow! There'll be stacks of accommodation available, probably some good deals last minute too.

Grands Montets didn't open until just before Christmas last winter. Shocked

It has been many years now that the Grand Montets open around or after the 12/15 December.

I've skied in Tignes at the end of November for the last three years. Only the Grand Motte glacier has been open, and a large proportion of the pistes are allocated to GS lanes for a variety of ski clubs and schools to train on. That leaves very limited terrain for free skiing. I agree that leaving your choice of resort until much closer to your date of travel is a good idea, but if you can delay your trip until the first week of December you might have a few more options.

Damn,

Just found out mother in law away in Vietnam from end November to 13th December so no one to mind kids for a break at end of November so thats that plan out of the door. Might think about mid December which I think would give us lots more options?

gwaelod,

I went last year. We were limited to the glacier, but it is huge. Snow was OK, if a bit icy at the bottom, but the views are fantastic and hopefully we will get a bit more snow this year.

Easiski lives and works there, so could fill you in better than I could.

gwaelod, all three of Zermatt's ski areas are timetabled to be open from 24 November, though that would obviously be subject to snow (natural or artificial).

On the strength of other places I've skied in the late autumn and early winter I'd also recommend Saas Fee and Hintertux. The Stubai glacier (also in Austria) is also good.

Of those places, Zermatt and Saas Fee score highly on romance for your anniversary. There's even a Hotel Romantika in Zermatt, which I've not stayed in but looks very cosy. Maybe have a look at package deals on the Zermatt website: www.zermatt.ch

Have a fun trip!

gwaelod, You would be very welcome at the PSB - we already have a 50th birthday couple coming. Very Happy

LDA normally opens on the first weekend of December. Snow can vary early in the season, but the resort was open and fine skiing from 2,600m upwards (to 3,600) for the first week, and from 2,200m therafter. We had NO SNOW PROBLEMS above 2,200m (the majority of our skiing) all season last year.

I'd go with David Goldsmith's suggestion of Zermatt. You take a risk at any resort of what the snow will be like, but at least there you have stunning scenery and a beautiful place. It's the only ski resort I've been to where I'd have been happy not to ski.....just to sit and admire the views.

I second Zermatt. It will have plenty of runs open. Be aware that high winds are a frequent problem at that height at that time of year.

Why not look at Norway. resorts such a Hemsedal will be open and should prove more extensive than most glaciers.
