Hope other resorts follow their lead. It will make it easier for real-time snow reports on snowheads from wifi equipped smart phones

SMALLZOOKEEPER, Jobs dropped a hint that interaces will be opened up - I think that has to happen, to compete properly with Symbian-based phones - which is when I'll get really interested. In the meantime, I'll probably get one for evaluation purposes!

SMALLZOOKEEPER, at the mo, you can't load 3rd party programs (such as games), or even ringtones, onto the iPhone.

The iPhone will be 3G by the time it launches with Vodafone in Western Europe in Nov.

I hope so. Steve Jobs recently explained it's omission on the launch model was because of the higher power requirement and physical size of the 3G circuitry.

You know it makes sense.

Interesting to hear talk of 3G I understood all the development was going into 4G and 3 had been written off as a bad job?

Chances are the touchscreen will suck, though.
Anyone interested in texting may find it unsatisfying.

The reviews in the US in the last day or two have been very positive about day-to-day use of the phone. They've said that not everything is perfect, but it deserves the hype that it's been getting in recent weeks.

Most criticized the touchscreen. There is no visual, audio or tactile feedback from the virtual keyboard. The virtual keys will likely be unrewarding or tricky to press.

Who are those "most"?
iPod control has no audio, visual or tactile feedback either. That didn't stop herds of people from using it and enjoying it.
Many bank machine (in NY) also have touch screen. So are the subway (tube) ticket machine. Although they have audio feedback, but it's largely unaudible due to the high surrounding noise these machines are installed. One can quickly learn to "type" with a rhythm and the lack of feed back doesn't really matter all that much.

The iPod scroller clicks. That is tactile feedback.
Phones are very personal devices. The user-experience has to be much higher than an occasional-use ATM. You make an invalid comparison.
I have an HTC Touch, an LG Chocolate and an LG Prada. Their touchscreens suck. The iPhone's will, too.

Is there a phone which has a better keyboard and a large screen and has the same small size as the iPhone? Inevitably compromises have to be made with small devices, and for me I'm happy to have a a touchscreen keyboard with the inevitable loss of feedback because my priority is for a large screen. Perhaps for Whitegold the priority will be a tactile keyboard in which case the iPhone isn't for him, despite, as I said earlier, the majority of the early reviews being, on balance, very positive.

Pre-camera phones all I ever wanted was a big display with at least 12 digits on 1 line, I always thought it stupid that a typical 11 digit UK phone number was split across 2 lines
