While New Zealand appears to be on track for its warmest May for 20 years, snowHeads are reporting fresh snow in many locations around Europe. SnowHeads in Chamonix reported a few cm at town level and up to 50cm at 1850m.
Switzerland : Andermatt (1450 m) was covered by snow in the morning. The Jaunpass (1700m) had 11 cm fresh snow, and Grindelwald reported 19 cm. snowHeads in Zermatt awoke to 10cm this morning.
...With a freezing level of 1200m in Eastern parts of Switzerland and as low as 1000m in parts of the French Alps, Europe seems finaly to be receiving some of the weather it was expecting back in January
One snowHead in Chamonix wrote, "'twas 0.5C at 11.00am, a tad fresh for the end of May! Especially as it was 27C only 5 days ago!"
The lucky snowHeads due to be in Hintertux this week look to be in for a treat with up to 50cm predicted there over the next couple of days!
However the cold front responsible for all this excitement will need to get a move on if it's to get far enough South to sort out New Zealand's worries before opening day. NZ's largest ski area, Mt Ruapehu is due to open in just three weeks and has nothing but Green hills at the moment although they are
hoping to get started on snowmaking in a week's time.
(actually, before anyone tells me: yes, I know that NZ gets its snow from Northbound weather from the south not cold fronts travelling South from the Arctic - thank you )
