Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Back pain

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
On my last ski trip at Easter I hurt the very bottom of my back after a hard landing. Its not unbearable, just annoying and occasionally takes my breathe away when i try to bend over. It seemed to clear up after about 1 week, then I played squash and it got sore again. Two weeks passed and it was almost better so i played a gentle game of squash but it got sore again. Its as bad now as it was when i did it, not unbearable, just a bit prohibitive.

Should I do the obvious and just stop playing squash or should I shut up and get on with it in the hope that it gets better?

I'm only 20 and havn't had problems before.

Any experiences anyone else has had with lower back pain would be interesting and helpful to hear.

Thanks:)

element, Sorry you're in pain. Better, I think, to try and have the problem properly diagnosed if you can, then you can make an informed decision on what to do about it. See a doctor/maybe have an x-ray?

element, As Hurtle, says get it checked out. Back injuries can be very painful and take a long time to clear up, best to get expert advise, and I would lay off the squash meantime.

which I would agree with, but try not to leave it too long to have it checked out since, as Eeyore implies, exercise is good - albeit a routine adapted as necessary. Too much rest and you'll risk having mobility problems.

I've had/have low back pain. Mine started at 35 tho'. You do need to get it checked out. You may need to change what terrain you ski - I don't ski bumps on alpine skis anymore - but I still can on Tele !

The bad news is... it probably won't go away Sad You can manage it (the pain that is) - acupuncture, chiropractic and a good sitting position at work work for me. Pilates and Yoga improve flexibility and strengthen the core muscles that support you.

You only have one lower back - it can't easily be replaced - so take care of it !

element, backs are something that need to be looked after and I'm no expert, but sometimes if you have a knock to say your lower back, scar tissue forms around that area. In time it will heal but it can be painful. As the other snowHead 's suggest, get yourself to a doctor who will at the very least will be able to suggest some excercises to help.

I also do alot of Pilates, which can improve muscular strength and mobility of the lumbar spine although you should see a doctor before you do it as you don't want to make things worse. I'm not sure the squash will be helping right now though!

Hope you get it sorted.

By this do you mean your "bottom"? i.e. are you referring to your coccyx? (follow the crease down between your buttocks and your coccyx is the lowest bone that you can feel).

I had a fall like this last year, and after a week it wasn't going away. I have had lower back problems since I was 11 and fell off a rope swing, but usually it just troubled me for a day or so. I went to see a nice lady, showed her my @rse, she hurt me a bit then I felt a lot better. A service which would cost you an arm an a leg in Soho.

She was a physio, she reassured me that my back wasn't broken and she gave me some exercises to do which are very efficatious.

GO AND SEE A DOCTOR! Very Happy

yes, get some treatment going on. See a osteo/physio, then do some physio/yoga (best option, but get a good one who knows what they are doing), even acupuncture. Must confess to being a yoga teacher myself. See lots of back problems coming through and they can generally be helped relatively easily.

element,

As ski says.

You may have a problem with a disc which you cannot ignore or bypass. Also, you don't want to degade it further. I hurt my back 15 yrs ago and it has never been right since. I now have two prolapsed discs which need nursing although golf and skiing are possible. You may need a MRI scan for the full extent of the problem and you will need a pyshio program. Backs are weird things so start the referral proc now.

I suffer with lower back pain [badly at times] due to various abuses in my younger days, best £50 i spent was on a bio skin back brace, obviously after a diagnosis and lots of chiropractic visits

when i wear it i can ski pain free, without it or if i forget to tighten it up when skiing hard my back kills for a couple of days or longer

well worth the money IMO Toofy Grin

element, with my professional hat on my advice would be to go and see the following people: chiropractor, sports massage therapist, Pilates instructor. Unless you're deliberately leaning slightly in the photo, a quick rough-and-ready postural assessment (which both chiropractor and Pilates instructor can carry out) shows that your spine is slightly out of alignment, which can cause muscular imbalance and compound any back injury.

X rays are not really very helpful with back pain and give 45 times the dose of radiation of a simple chest X Ray.

See a doc or osteopath. Someone you trust to carefuly assess whats going on. It can do no harm to do some core stability work. Have a look at This advice sheet from an adventure racing site for some good exercises to improve core stability, and reduce the stress on your spine. Has a squash coach looked at your technique to see if you are aggrevating your back by doing something that can be modified in the court?

comprex,

Depends on the Dr...but if you build up a history then an MRI is the most detailed investigation. CT is a cheaper option (IIRCC) but I'd avoid that if poss, as you will end up on a CT scan waiting list - which in my case was 16 weeks - and when the specialist overruled the GP --as my mates up the pub said he would .... rolling eyes you have to transfer to a MRI queue and start at the back of the queue again.. rolling eyes rolling eyes

And boredsurfin, you'll be happy to know that in the interim between that photo being taken and this post, I've had a substantial amount of hair removed from my head:)

element, you bloody squash players just don't know whan to rest an injury, do you rolling eyes rolling eyes rolling eyes . Sounds like you have probably bruised your coccyx !! See a physio or osteopath, and give the squash a rest. BTW, hubby plays four times a week, so I am speaking from experience.

element, I play squash and 5s and suffer from back pain. Make sure you get a decent pair of trainers with enough support but a bit of give in the sole. Squash courts usually aren't too bad because there's a bit of give in a wooden floor but astro pitches or tennis courts with concrete underneath are a nightmare for my back.

The other thing that's really helped me was buying a decent mattress. I had one that was too hard. I sleep mostly on my side and the hardness of the mattress was keeping my hip pushed up and therefore my spine bent.

Suggest you try taking the arrow out.
Then, as as been repeatedly suggested here: go and see a professional.

(It amazes me the number of times snowheads post health related questions here. Why on earth would anyone take any notice of the opinion of people with no medical knowledge? And why not go and see your GP?)
