my brother has just moved out to NZ and asked me to come over some time and have a butchers around the place. if i'm gonna go all that way i wanna go for a few weeks and would love to ski southern hemisphere as i doubt many chances to do this will come about. being in the forces its a bit tricky getting that amount of time off so i'll only really be able to go when i get back from afghanistan as we get a fair bit of stand-down. i'm set to get back at the start of october so was wondering if any snowheads know about skiing down under. when does their season tend to run form/to? i know october will be really late in the season but will it b worthwhile me draggin my kit out there?
i will be staying on the north island and have just found out about 4 resorts but am looking for any recommendations. long shot i know but hope some1 can help.
cheers, mark

If you're staying in the North Island, you'll be skiing Turoa and Whakapapa on Mt Ruapehu. Both ski fields normally close around the end of Oct but they have been know to open in Jan if the snow is good.
NIWA (national institute of weather and atmosphere) expects that a La Nina weather patern will be prevalent in NZ for this winter-this means it will be milder than usuall and therefore does not bode well for October. On the plus side however, Turoa, my favourite spot in the north has a big shinny new lift as a treat for everyone this winter
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

From another posting on Southern Hemisphere skiing
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the transition to La Niña means extensive cooling of the central and eastern Pacific Ocean. In Australia (particularly Eastern Australia), La Niña events, which have been absent for 10 years, are associated with increased precipitation and cooler temperatures – positive news for the approaching winter season for all snow enthusiasts.
Do La Nina conditions cause different effects in Australia then they do in NZ? Interested to know as I'm heading to NZ in September
Yes, apparently they do. A 50% chance of it developing they say and it will particularly affect the earlier months of winter if it does

BGA, not done much for my evening either, what with plans brewing for next year!

50% chance of developing also means that theres a 50% chance that it won't too. So time to start making offerings to the gods of the mountains, appeasing the spirits etc

and on those mornings when you get up feeling like you hate the environment in a general sort of way, the option always exists to get in a great big four wheel drive, roar up the highway guzzling dead cheap petrolium and then head to Ski Dubai, a tube chilled buy power supplied by oil burning power stations to -5 degrees in 45+ degrees desert.

I have skied Turoa and Whakapapa on Mt Ruapehu. Hiking up to the crater lake is fun. Ohakune is the place to stay.
However, only a few months ago after an eruption the Crater lake wall burst and sent a torrent of Mud & Volcanic acid water down the slope
stanton, All went as planned mate. No where near any of the 3 ski fields, all the alarms went off. The last eruption left a tempra dam which slowly allowed the crater lake to fill up. Every one knew it was going to give at some point so the authorities were very prepared for it.petemillis, I went to school in Palmerston North. Nothing wrong with the place.

kiwi1, yeah, I'm sure Palmerston North is good - I got the wrong end of the stick with what a mate of mine who's a copper told me. He spent 6 months in Palmerston North, but was working in Auckland. The crime he was talking about (Samoans chasing each other down the street with machetes) was in dodgier suburbs. Hoping to get over at some point soon for a big trip and to visit relatives and a few companies over there.
Then you can post your own questions or snow reports...

Wellingtons quite far from any of the good slopes unfortunately. South Island is def best.
After all it is free

futurecut, Yup - but the job offer is based around the capital. I can do long weekends away as the NZ winter will be my quiet period regarding workload.

Unfortunatly i believe this title has been claimed by my suburb of Te Atatu.
If i was comimg out in October I would think about getting on a cheap flight to the south island and visiting some of the club ski fields you can find links to them all on www.snow.co.nz.
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

by the way wot is `tramping'?!?!? does it involve living in cardboard boxes and eating out of bins?

Tramping - it's yomping or hiking or walking.
There are some interesting links from here http://www.enzed.com/tramp.html
A couple that made me chuckle are the ones for Bushwise Women and Auckland Gay Tramping Group. Christ knows what a bushwise woman is...obviously a woman who likes bush I guess. And what the hell is Gay Tramping?

petemillis, went to a wedding in Australia a couple of years ago and the bride was a Kiwi. Her chief bridesmaid made a speech at the reception stating how the bride loved the outdoors and how some of her fondest memories were of the two of them bush bashing together. Pleasant surprise for the groom, as we remarked at the time
