This phrase pops up quite a bit. What exactly is it?

BASI teaching method using a clear progression through stages, they are:
Introductory Activities
Sliding
Snowplough
Snowplough Turning
Plough-Paralleling
Parallel Turning
Then beyond Central Theme:
Piste
Steeps
Bumps
Variable Conditions
Freestyle

The Central Theme isn't a million miles away from SSE's progression, I really don't know why there's that much aggro. Ok, so they throw in a few extra phrases like "core form skiing" and "6 points of dynamic balance" but essentially it's not a million miles away.
They even changed from "Basic Swing" to "Plough Parallel" a few years ago.
Politics.

veeeight, They're obviously finally overcoming the politics and seeing sense. Not before time.
They had that stupid thing with calling the 'Fall Line' the 'Flow Line' because they thought that the word 'Fall' created negative images.

I think that 'Plough Parallel' is a better phrase than 'Basic Swing' because it can be instantly be understood as a part of the progression between 'Plough Turning' And 'Parallel Turning' whereas 'Basic Swing' sounds more like something from a wife swapping party.

Spyderman, veeeight, thanks.
Is a I understand it then, it's steps in a progression. I thought it might be some concept that ran through the steps like a thread. Otherwise, I can't see what's central or thematic about it!

Piste ? Did that used to be the Speed strand ?
|
|
|
|
|

david@mediacopy,
Yes, Piste was the Speed strand. It is now concerned with an increase in speed relative to the individual and also the ability to use the skis design to the maximum benefit.

laundryman, The Central Theme gives a clear and progressive framework, from which Instructors can work. It's just a technical model and backbone in which to apply the fundamentals of: Control of speed & line, Adjustments for snow & terrain, Steering; edge, pressure & rotation control, Body management; posture, balance, movements & co-ordination, Flow; smooth linked movements.

If you go back far enough, you might find that the BASI Central Theme has it's origins from the PSIA, though you'd be hard pressed to get any trainers to admit to that today
|
The ability to look at teaching methods from around the world, use, adapt and improve, is key to improvement. The BASI Alpine Manual refers quite early on, to the Canadian concept of 'Steering angles' for people to become aware of the quality of their control of speed and line.

Never said it was! If you look around hard enough you'll find many of the teaching "systems" either have origins from another system (eg: NZ from Canada) and/or borrow heavily from another.

Glad to see an open minded view on here.
The number of times I've run coaching sessions involving other BASI instructors, that have said "oh, that's not the BASI system - we don't want to know." Good skiing is good skiing.

veeeight, That's why I went through the CSIA system, SSE & SSS as well as BASI. The more pools of information the better. To me any skiing is good skiing, better a day skiing than a day in the office.

So for the jargon busters out there is "plough parallel" bascially the same as the old school Stem (christie)?

fatbob, Similar, but instead of stepping the inside ski parallel, the ski keeps snow contact and is rotated, with the pivot point under the foot rather than at the tip in the old stem turn.
