Has anyone taken their shovel & probe in hand luggage?
I've always put it in the main luggage due to concerns that customs may think it's potentially a weapon and would confiscate them. Now with the lower weight limits I'm considering leaving them in my rucksack and taking as hand luggage.

- You are prohibited from carrying the following items in your hand luggage: guns, firearms and weapons, pointed/edges weapons and sharp objects. e.g. ice-skates, crampons, knives, open razors/blades, scissors, tradesman's tools, saws, screwdrivers etc. Blunt instruments capable of causing injury e.g. baseball/cricket bats, hockey sticks, golf clubs, canoe paddles, fishing rods, martial arts equipment, snooker cues.
- Any item that could be defined as a weapon will be confiscated.

They wouldn't let a shovel on in hand luggage even if it did fit in...
Maybe worth ringing the airline or asking at check in. Surely its legitmate kit, and in the hold a shovel can't do any harm..

kitenski, I don't think you'd get away with a shovel in your hand luggage - my son had to put is snowboard bindings in his main luggage and also ski-boots weren't allowed either. Our friends, not surprisingly, had their snow chains confiscated too

I think my shovel and probe would be treated as weapons of mass destruction - and so pack them in main luggage.

A lady in our chalet in VC last week worked for CAA security & we went through of list gear with her one night. Shovel & probe most definately not allowed in hand luggage but fine in main hold luggage.
I put my shovel, probe & toolkit in my skibag to save weight in my checked holdall. I take my transceiver in my hand luggage plus my ski bindings if I'm taking two pairs of skis in the flat.
My mate who came to VC with us had a roll of electrician's tape & some cable ties left in the bottom of his backpack (he's a sparky) & they were confiscated as possible restraining devices - although he reckoned they been in there for years & he's done many flights before without them being spotted.
On the return trip I forgot to empty me bladderpack & was pulled by security & had to drain it. Apparently organic material or fluids (as contained in explosives) show up orange on the scanner screen.

IncogSkiSno, I've done it twice now & both times my backpack has been pulled at EMA going out, but once examined it was no problem - more a case of the staff being curious to what I was carrying.
I had no problem at all coming out of GVA both times, & on the first time I heard the scanner operator tell his colleague that they were ski bindings - so they're obviously used to seeing them in GVA.

I've been stopped at GVA because of the (empty) bladder in my Camelbak and once had to come all the way back through security at Birmingham because of a suspicious item in my already checked in boot bag - a retractable skilock.

I took my (metal!) shovel and probe through in my hand luggage at Gatwick last month - but thought afterwards how strange I had been allowed through, so packed them in hold baggage on my way back.

Megamum, in many ways good - provided you have at least one other driver in the party, don't mind the prospect of fitting chains in any weather, and, ideally, park in covered parking. I once had a nightmare moving the car every evening as I came of the slopes to let the snowploughs through, when there was several days dump at Val D'Isere.

When I went over to the USA last December we took a Dakine Helipak over as hand luggage which had in it an aluminium shovel and probe. Went through the X-ray and was taken on two planes both outside and inside the USA. Also had helmet hanging from one of the straps.

achilles, Some years back in Megeve I slept in after a long night out, the police kindly removed my car and parked it in their secure parking area, I left it there for 10 days. Fine amounted to half the cost of putting it in the underground parking.
