This is a follow on question from another post on this forum.
I'm in the market to buy an Salomon X-Wing Blast (I've tested it, and really liked it), and according to the Salomon Website and also my local shop, I should be skiing a 162cm.
Does this seem a little short to the experts out there  I would have thought a 170cm sounds about right, to give a bit of float on un-groomed/off-piste.
I'm aboout 5'10", 76kg, and am looking for a ski to replace my Volkl 4-Stars (168cm), so that I can start exploring a bit more of the mountain - but I guess I'll still be spending the majority of my time on piste.
Alternatively, should I go shorter (162cm) but fatter (X-Wing Fury)?

I've been looking for a weigh-length chart. Where on the Salomon website did you find that information?

There is no formula. Ski lengths are very individual and you need to try several lengths to see which suits you best. As a rough guide if you ski mainly piste at moderate speeds a shorter ski will do. If on the other hand you ski fast and venture offpiste a longer ski will give you more stability at speed and more float in the powder. If as you say you would like to explore moer of the mountain i would be tempted to test and buy the longest ski that you can comfortably handle.

jonflat2, I dropped from 170cm CrossMax to 162 cm Tornados which are much snappier and more manouverable, they also float better in powder. I do mainly on-piste with a bit of off piste. If I were more into freeriding I'd probably go for 170cm Furys. (I weigh 70kg).

You can try 162 in deep snow but you'll soon get that idea out of your head when you go over the tips a few times, even more frustrating when that's the only reason you fell.... Buy them if you want them to be turney and quick on piste but you will not help yourself in deeper stuff. You need to make up your mind where you are going to spend most of your time and where you want to ski

Mmmm.... I'm 10 kg lighter and skied the next size down (156?) Tournado in knee deep powder. I wasn't that good at the pow stuff and fell a few times. But never over the tip.
I'd go for a bit wider still for lateral stability sake. But length? I couldn't care less.

jonflat2, I'd suggest them a bit longer than the 162, even though you are a bit lighter than average. I think that the 170 would be more stable for you, and given the weight of the skis not be an issue when you need to turn 'em quick. Note, however, that I have skied only the Fury and the Tornado (both in the 170).

abc, with regards to the Salomon website - there's a product selector tool, located on the left hand side of the main site, where you plug in your info/stats, and it comes up with suggestions for boots/skis. Not sure how accurate this sort of tool is though.

jonflat2, I had a look at the tool, I don't think it will match users advice. Also on that tool you couldn't specify you on-piste/off-piste skiing percentage.

jonflat2, I played around a bit with that tool. I also think it sell you short. (so you need to buy a new one once you figure out you've outgrown it -- ALREADY).
I skied the Tornado and found it to my liking. But the tool wouldn't let me have it until I classified myself as "Specialist", the top rank above Expert! I know I most certainly am NOT beyond expert. On the other hand, the length recommendation does come out to be 154, which was the one I tried and thought it just about right.
For off-piste, I would seriously consider the Fury. 76mm underfoot is just not quite enough lateral stability for me at my skill level.

In my experience, the Tornado has a relatively low speed limit as compared to the Fury. At around 35 or 40mph, the tip of the Tornado gets a little energetic. The Fury never did, even at 45 or 50mph on early season snow at Loveland last fall.

Yea, me too. Unless I'm missing something, the Tornado is a good, all round ski for intermediates who spend most of their time on-piste.
