Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Is SMALLZOOKEEPER a descendant of an avalanche survivor of 170 years ago?

His name's Rooke. Not a particularly rare name, but a distinctive one.

The avalanche which crashed into South Street, Lewes, on December 27th 1836 killed eight people. One survivor (of seven) was a labourer (I believe a teenager - still working on this) called Jeremiah Rooke. He played a significant role in the disaster because he tried to persuade a mother not to enter one of the destroyed houses, just moments before the avalanche struck at 10.15am. However the force of the snow or falling houses broke his femur.

Tracing genealogy over 170 years requires a lot of research, but it would be interesting to know if they are in any way related. He had a brother called James Rooke.

Anyone know anybody called Barnden, Bridgman (no e) or Geer?
Also, the names Berry, Button, Thomson (no p), Drakes, Verrall and Gell come up in relation to the disaster.

Not particularly keen on snowheads actual names being declared by other snowheads on the web. I for one have chosen an anonymous name, and wish it to be used on this site. True, names can usually be deduced by the determined. But I don't think malicious viewers should be assisted.

I also wonder why this thread is in The Piste section.
