Poster: A snowHead

Hello to the Snowheads forum!!, its my first post so go easy on me!!!!,
Im looking to book a few days skiing later in the year for a family members birthday, it will be late May time so im guessing zermatt is my best (and only??) option. I've so far only been on the one skiing trip (after a quick tamworth beginners lesson), december this season in megeve, but felt quite at home on icy red runs (well as happy as a first time skiier can be!!!) , and as a group we are all of a similar ability.
Has anybody any experience of late season in zermatt and any suggestions/opinions if it would be worth it for 2-3 days skiing, i.e is the ski area just the glacier by then??, Also anyone any ideas on decent, and preferably cheap accomodation????
Hope someone can help me out!!,
Thanks

Welcome.
Zermatt is a good choice.
It is, more or less, the last Alpine glacier that is open every day of the year.
It should keep you amused for a couple days.
Other options worth looking at might include Hintertux (Austria) and Tignes (France), provided they are open.
Don't forget the suntan lotion. It will likely be scorchio.
Enjoy.

Mick_1243, welcome to s !
Imo, it would be worth a couple of days in Zermatt just gazing at the mountains.
The summer timetable is at the bottom of this page:

In late May you should have no problem skiing at least as far down as Trockener Steg at 2900m but watch out as the Klein Matterhorn cable car will be closed as follows:
"The cable car Trockener Steg - Matterhorn glacier paradise is closed for improvements from 14 until 17 and from 21 until 25 May 2007."
It could be scorchio but otoh it could easily be snowing up top, so make sure you have full winter kit as well !

Just to reinforce that, here at 640m near Zurich we had snow (didn't settle) on 30 May last year.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Mick_1243, Welcome
I went there in Aug '88 and it was very hot in the village at 1850m. The skiing is up the Klien Matterhorn lift but I think the drags, which are very long - will be open as well. It is quite a big area and 3-4 days skiing should work out fine. The ski days may be shorter as the sun gets up and melts the snow but then it could be cloudy and snowing as well. Be prepared for any weather.
Zermatt in the summer is every bit as good as Zermatt in the winter and well worth the trip.

Mick_1243, gonna be there myself the last bank holiday weekend in May. Our kid has been for a couple of days the last 2 Augusts, so shouldn't be a problem at that time. It is also well out of season, so most places should be fairly cheap.

Thanks for the information!!, I'm thinking the same about it being worth it even if just for the views, but looks like I may have to change my planned dates to go, 21 to 24th, as we want to get some skiing in. It seems the summer ski area should be more than enough for 2 or 3 days, considering were still learning!! . Also thinking towards zermatt for early december if megeve has poor snow again this year.

Zermatt's been a regular destination for me since the mid-1960s, so here are a few tips:
The Hotel Couronne - last place I stayed - was brilliant. I was there in the first week of June. 2nd floor room, facing the Matterhorn, is about the best view you could get in the world. It's right by the river, just down the road from the church, and about 10 mins walk from the Klein Matterhorn base station. They do packages, and ski rental discounts from their own shop, which is good quality.
The youth hostel is even better placed.
There are lots of other good hotels in Zermatt, at all prices. I can recommend the Testa Grigia, a few yards up from the station, for budget prices. The cheap Hotel Bahnhof is an old favourite with climbers. I've not stayed there. The Hotel Post in the Bahnhofstrasse (main street) is legendary, for its rabbit-warren-type layout, wacky rooms, and lovely bars/restaurants.
Rent a mountainbike for late spring. The skiing at that time is likely confined to the 6-seat chair up the Furggsattel glacier run, which is fine but you'll only want to ski it for 2-3 hours a day. Take bikes on the Furi cablecar and go up to the dam and Zmutt for lunch. Beautiful. There's also great biking downhill from Sunnegga etc.
Don't miss the Vernissage cinema and bar - unique and bizarre. The new museum (underground, where the short-lived casino went bust) sounds interesting. Try and obtain the fascinating book about the mountain guide Ulrich Inderbinen, who lived to 102 years and died just a couple of years ago. His life spanned the entire 20th century. The history of Zermatt is gripping.
