Poster: A snowHead

maps are not my strong point - but is it possible to drive straight from Martigny to Chamonix in the winter? - I would have imagined that the col would be closed but multimap asserts quite stridently that the way is over the top ...

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Col des Montets closed this evening when I drove past the sign en route back to Verbier having dropped two friends back at GVA. Not too surprised as it was hard enough getting up the hill to Verbier from Le Chable. It's generally open though but snow chains a good idea.

BGA, thanks for the HELPFUL reply - so the pass is usually open in the winter subject to conditions.

poma, If the Col is closed, the traffic is routed alternatively through the rail tunnel at Montroc

poma, there is a single lane in the Montroc tunnel which is used when the col is closed so that Vallorcine does not remain cut off.

LARGEZOOKEEPER,
Don't like the sound of that - driving alongside a beast of a TGV?
