I cannot believe people use these types of parking services.
Anyone with half-a-brain knows that your average couldn't-care-less Brit is gonna rag your fast car around at the earliest possible opportunity.

Whitegold, It's only a piece of metal and it's covered by the parking service's motor trade policy anyway. People get too anal about their poor precious likkle motor car like as if it's some living being. To be honest, I'd have less faith in 99% of the garages and bodyshops around here than in valet parking services.

Me mate spent quite a lot of time around christmas chopping down the old roll-on, roll-off loading ramp at Fleetwood docks. He says you should see how the ship loaders treat the Ferraris etc beeing shipped over to the tax exisles on the Isle Of Man
On started life as a coupe, but ended as a rag top after being slid beneath an artics' trailer.

marc gledhill, a friend of mine worked on the docks unloading cars, apparently the 0-60 time that ferrari give their cars is quite accurate...

The tax exiles would probably expect those of us who do pay tax to meet the cost of pursuing any Fleetwood docker or shipping company which was responsible for criminal damage to their Ferraris. Funny how hard it is to feel any sympathy. The dockers are behaving reprehensibly, but people who spend vast sums of money on such absurd toys which are built to travel hugely faster than is legally permissible or morally acceptable are not behaving any better. (How can you tell I'm up at 5 o'clock in the morning working on my mother in law's tax return before heading back to the mountains....)

pam w, almost every car on sale today will travel much faster than the speed limit (in my younger and more foolish days I recall getting 110 out of a Clio 1.2 ). Where do you draw the line? £30k? £100k? Just because somebody has the money to buy a fast car/other toy does not make it more acceptable for somebody else to damage it

pam w, I have a lot of sympathy with your attitude, but does it really matter whetherpeople spend their money on silly toys or something more 'sensible' (like ski chalets?); it's all sticking money into the system which someone will spend somewhere, keepeing the wheels of commerce grinding round to all our benefits, isn't it? (As you can see, my grasp of economics is tenuous.)

richmond, I agree. And, if the sun is out when I leave work, put the top down on my spider, put on the sheepskin flying jacket that I keep in the boot and enjoy the commute home!

mjg, richmond, yes, even my car will do well over the speed limit (plus carry six adults and their luggage and do 43 mpg) but whilst it is difficult to know where to draw the line there is a difference between an ordinary family car and a Ferrari, a car built just for speed, with no capacity for carrying anything significant and a huge capacity to guzzle fuel. My main complaint, though, is people who won't pay tax but still usually expect to benefit from what the rest of us pay for. I don't think they are any less (or more) morally reprehensible than dockers who race around in a car they haven't paid for.
The purchasers of Ferraris would contribute more to the economy if they weren't rich and smart enough to be able to evade or avoid (only they know which...) the taxes which make up a significant proportion of the purchase price of a new car.
But, as I said, being up at 5 am wading through a pile of old financial statements isn't conducive to good temper.... I concluded that my MIL's taxable income for 2005/6 amounted to a grand £9,300. I expect she'll have to pay about £200 tax on that.

pam w, but not all of us need family cars, or want to waste road space with vans designed to carry anything significant.
A lot of rich people are rich cause they have accountants who do their tax returns, and can manage to make them pay minimum taxes...

You know it makes sense.

Wear The Fox Hat, my car is shorter than a VW Golf. No space wasted. You're right though; if my mother in law was rich I wouldn't have to have been sitting here at 5 am surrounded by all the papers she has failed to keep in order for the past 15 years!

It's about time people grew up and stopped considering cars as toys. Anyway, I'm just off for a quick blast in my nitroused, boosted, lowered Nissan Skyline to blow the cobwebs off it before it goes into the bodyshop for some work prior to me flogging it to some 20 something year old who is happy to pay £3000 or more a year insuring the £5k beast (thankfully I've got a trader's policy!)

If it helps the discussion, there was also a tale of a suberbike ending up in the dock itself.
I like fast cars myself. If you can afford it, and want it, buy it.
