Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Gloves

I need a new pair of gloves, having lost mine last season.

As I am a clutz and tend to put things down and not pick them up I don't want to spend £80 on a pair!

My requirements are 1) Removable/washable inner 2) "leash" so I cannot drop them off chairlifts 3) pocket for fancy lift passes.

Obviously they must also be toasty warm!

I am not sure about mittens, I put my hand in a pair the other day that had internal finger slots which felt very nice, what are other peoples experiences with such?

My dad used to have a pair of mittens where the top bit could open up reveal fingerless gloves. That way his fingers were kept warmer and he could use his fingers without taking them off. Not sure if he still has them so don't know make.

I'd have thought mittens with finger separators would defeat the object to some degree (excuse the pun).

I bought a pair of expensive(ish) but superb Level X-Multi gloves last year, removeable Goretex Windstopper inners, breathable outer with extra insulation ond loops so you could easily attach a leash to them, I found myself skiing in the morning with the gloves together but in the afternoon as it warmed up I just wore the inner gloves, I'm putting them down as my best bit of ski gear last year and in the top 3 of bits of ski clothing I've ever bought

Warmest thing in the world until the inside starts fraying. Of course, you lose the dexterity to light a cigarette (I think I posted to another thread about this Embarassed ) , adjust a binding (like when cleaning it of snow while stuck in a tree well Shocked ) or even pull a zipper (abandoned mittens indoors). Since my mitten days, all my zips have tied webbing extensions on them.

Oh, I used to be a Grandoe man. </bluesymoan>

buy them in a resort, much cheaper, better sizes, more selection etc. I almost definately will loose a pair every time i go away, normally on the way back down waiting for a cable car - i'll leave them or they will get knocked out of/off my jacket.

Ive only ever used Reuch of Pheonix gloves both are warm and never paid more than £50.00 for a pair. Never used a washable liner I have never given that a thought

I'm with DGO, I bought a pair of Level something or other gloves last season and they are exceptionally good. The inners are quite adequate for warm days and the outers keep you toasty on the coldest of days - I've tested these down to -18 dec C and never once got cold hands.
Leashes, large gauntlets, wrist straps, nose and goggle wipes etc...
I paid £80 (ish) for them in Slush and Rubble but saw them in resort for €80.
Best bit of kit I've got but then most of my kit is 10 years old.

Says it all, pay £80 in S&R or 80 Euros in a resort. Glad to hear you're happy to pay over the odds.

David@traxvax, stopped buying gear here, except maybe in sales. Waste of money. Much better choice in resort too. The most unusual place I've purchased was skis in Barcelona of all places, but I was justified , as I knew what I wanted, and also how much they were in resort.

David@traxvax, what do you consider over the odds?
I discovered they were £30 cheaper in resort AFTER I'd been to S&R. I was tempted to buy the gloves in the resort and, on my return to the UK, take them into S&R and ask for my money back thus recouping my £30. I decided against it as is a little naughty. Little Angel
£80 is steep but the gloves came highly recommended from a colleague of mine in Haute Savoie who ski tours and is a qualified guide so I thought the gloves were probably worth a bit extra.

Any gear in the UK is expensive and especially so in S&R where you also have to put up with crap service and know it all assistants. I'm glad to say I haven't bought anything in the UK for years, apart from buying directly from importers, then you really see how much margin there is.

Im sure theres some kind of price fixing in the British market every sells at list price during the season. There doesnt seem to be shops out there prepared to go for large market share lower prices and volume that you seem to get in other retail markets. I sell woodwork machines if we advertised list price I would have no customers!!

The shops blame it on import duty and VAT but we a free market economy you can buy mail order from europe with postage its still cheaper there should be no import tax unless you buy from Switzerland. Go to S & R try the goods make sure your happy then buy mail order or in resort, You could even order it for when you arrive.

Its time British retailers stopped ripping us off

You will find good guys in Britains ski shopsbut not many

I've just ordered some gloves from snow and rock since they didn't have a great selection in Whistler last season (mid-season). Only the expensive stuff (CA$120) was left in the shops...

Russell, any retailer in specialist goods will rip you off where there isn't a great choice of shops. I doubt it's just Britain. However, I've never found a bargain ski shop in resorts either! Confused

In Ze shop (ADH-where I worked) we had about 50 different models of gloves. Level on the whole are excellent and very hard-wearing, a new gadet came out a couple of years ago and now the memory is failing as I can't remeber the name. But the sign is a little red button thing on the cuff. Used with Gortex outers the inner has the capacity to take your body temperature and if you take the gloves off for 5/10 mins and put them back on the are still toasty, proving that they have the ability to retain heat. Level are fairly expensive £50+. Columbia have a good range and aare around £30 - I have their mits with inner gloves and love them - so each to their own. Incidently Killy do fantastic gloves, they don't tend to go in for innners and have a more traditional look, but I've heard only good reports - £40+

I've just bought the Moutain Equipment, Guide Series Couloir XCR gloves. There are leather and XCR, a great combo in my book. They fit great and look like they can take a beating. £50-£60

I got my Gore-tex mittens free with my Gore-tex jacket on a half-term special offer.

I can't ski in "fat" gloves - it's as if my fingers have turned into sausages and I lose the dexterity to wrap them round a pole; mittens every time for me.

I write my resort address/holiday date (if it says "January 28" and you find the glove in the snow in March, I'm not in a rush to get it back) on a label inside my glove (can you tell I've got children Wink), so that if they get separated and handed in, I can identify them. It worked last time when I lost an expensive mitten belonging to a friend, which I thankfully got back from the Tourist Office.

I've got Quiksilver ski gloves - extremely waterproof and breathable and warm, with a removeable inner glove, and an adjustable leash to go round your wrist, and adjustable gaiter to keep the snow out. They're excellent, and cost less than £30 from Surf and Ski in Brighton. A mate of mine bought his from another shop but can' remember where.

Hmmm, I was having a think about gloves so I thought i would have a quick search n here we are...

I bought a pair of BMW Pro Winter motorcycle gloves in 2000, I have been browsing a few sites and am astonished that folk accept that ski gloves will only last 2 seasons. Shocked

I have been using my BMW gloves for biking and snow sports for 6 years addmitedly they dont have a wee pouch for a ski pass, I was thinking of replacing them due to starting to fray from sliding along tarmac when I or someone else has been silly.

I think I might just get another pair if they are still the same quality.... Puzzled

I used to have Salomon Goretex ones, which fell apart after a few years.
Got a great pair of Oregon Research gloves, which I left in Stowe, so they only got about 4 days use.
Replaced them with Gordini Fuse gloves which I got in Aspen for about GBP37. Excellent quality and very warm Smile

Highly unfashionable, but i still ski in Decathlon gloves. My present pair have lasted for 2 seasons so, and will be used again in 2 weeks time. the main advantage is that they are cheap so if i do break them they don't cost very much to replace!

Agree with both. i would always rather wear gloves, but when it gets real cold you simply can't beat a pair of Mitt's with some silk liners.

I got some merino wool glove liners from S&R this year and they're fantastic. I was constantly stitching up the holes in my silk liners...

Don't know if they're available outside Switzerland but we find Snowlife gloves to be excellent VFM: good quality, durable and not particularly expensive. My leather ones cost about 45-50 squid and 4 years on are barely showing any signs of wear

My Scott gloves have done about 6 weeks and 4 of the fingers have gone already, next time I ski anywhere cold it's either back to the 15 year old C&A cheapo specials (that are still going strong) or buy a new pair, preferably with leather bits on the high wear areas.

I reckon mitts all the way - people think they feel a bit weird compared to gloves but you're only holding a ski pole. Once you get then, you'll never go back. Hestra are warm and toastie but pretty £££££ - not sure if they are available in UK??

Had a pair of Hestra's when I did a season in the 3 valleys. They lasted me all seaon then another 6-7 holidays after that! Really tough...super-warm too.

Just replaced them with a pair of Burton Gore Mitts with removable liners (only for extreme cold)...like you say, never gone back to gloves! Forgot to mention - they look awesome as opposed to "Gash" Smile

In Aspen (not known for it's cheapness!) at the ESA a couple of weeks ago I bought a pair of Burton's ($70 £3Cool - not too impressed I had cold fingers on a blue sky, no wind, day!!!
I then replaced them with Gordini's with 'lavawool' at WTFH's suggestion - very warm even down to about -10, -15F (ie bloody cold). Same price, about £40 (thanks Foxy)

Swaney Toasters (crap name) are mittens which unzip to reveal a glove inside, if anyone fancies that sort of thing.
