Catholic News Pope John Paul II secretly left the Vatican to go on over 100 skiing trips in Italy, the Catholic News Service has reported. Dressed in a jacket, beret and sunglasses, he was rarely recognised, according to new revelations by his former secretary, Cardinal Stansilaw Dziwisz. He describes the secret outings in a book of memoirs to be published in a few days time...

I didn't realise JPII was a keen skier until I was discussing skiing with one of my patients, who is a Polish emigre, and he casually mentioned that he used to ski with him as a young guy back in Poland. I wasn't 100% convinced until I saw the guy six months later and he brought in a very old photo of the two of them together!

I can see it now St John Paul of the Alps!
He was also a keen footy player, playing as a keeper as a young man.

I've had a ski instructor tell me to adopt the stance of keeper facing a penalty: pretty stable, but able to take off in any direction - maybe the football stood JPII in good stead! Incidentally, during his pontificate, I think he mainly skied in the Appenines rather than the Alps.

......quite the opposite, if my World War II history serves me correctly, during a cordon search in Warsaw I believe, he was hidden in the basement of a house, in which all persons were executed by SS troops.
