The resolution of the satellite images used by Google Earth to cover some of the French Alps have been dramatically improved. The facility to fly around your favourite resorts in 3D is quite remarkable. Thanks to PisteHors.com for the heads up on this.

rob@rar, cool isn't it !
They've updated quite a few locations recently, including Edinburgh, on earth and google maps. By process of elimination some people I know have worked out that the photos here were taken on Aug 21 2005. Here's the clinching proof, fire engines attending the burnt out shell of the Craigmillar Hearts Supporters' club.
We reckon about 9.35am, as the KLM flight to Amsterdam is just leaving.
Sadly the hi-res stops just to the East of a certain Swiss village.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

rob@rar, I spend almost as much time doing that as on snowHeads. I felt I knew Zermatt/Cervinia before I got there! Same for my summer cycling and sailing holiday locations!

rob@rar, really cool, although it has only done Serre Che as far as Villeneuve so far. brian, stopped just to the east of ours too.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Quite amazingly I can just about see my grandmother in her garden - it's a bit of an ill-defined dot, but it can only be my Nan!
The new photos that include Les Arcs aren't brilliant compared to images elsewhere, but they're a considerable improvement over the low resolution images they were using. The satellite photos were taken within the last three years as you can see my apartment building.

Generally better images can be found on the French site www.geoportail.fr - they like to do things their own way!!

snowpages, I couldn't see a way of getting a perspective view on the French site, which helps to understand the lie of the land with Google Earth. I like the French way of merging the map data though.

I am enjoying the notion of you checking out the waves via google earth prior to sailing!

Kaiser, synthetic aperture radar images would be just the thing. They'll be live on the internet one day (if they're not already)!

How good is the resolution these days? A friend used SAR to look at volcano deformation many years ago when we were doing post-grad research and the resolution wasn't brilliant for that, but I'd guess more than good enough for examining terrain.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

A bit better than it was and brilliant for looking at digital elevation models, but not good enough for ground deformation studies.

You know it makes sense.

rob@rar, of course it has the advantage of being "all weather" as well!

rob@rar, sadly, that would require a magnetic anomaly scan or such like.
