Er - what happens to the skis they jettisoned? - bit expensive if you need to replace the skis each time, maybe they used old second hand ones! 
I guess they had some customised remote release mechanism for the skis?

That is complete madness! I want a go!!! By the look of the ski release it looks like he pulls a cord or something, sure you could rig something to push the binding by pulling a cord if you had time time!
