Hi Peeps,
First post so go easy,
Going to Flaine at Xmas and I am struggling for a transfer. Plane lands at 1900 so I will miss any public transport, which leaves taxis which are astronomical. With me I have the 'Boss' and two kids.
Any ideas would be appreciated!
Thanks

Chappers, welcome to snowHeads!
I assume you're landing at Geneva, bus fare according to www.altibus.com would be 44euro per person. Taxi may be your only hope - what sort of 'astronomical' are you getting as a quote for the taxi and who from?

Chappers, welcome to Snowheads. With four of you, hiring a car would probably be the best bet, even though you probably won't need it in Flaine (depending on where you are staying). There's plenty of choice at Geneva and the route out from the airport to Flaine is very straightforward - you are on the motorway within a few hundred metres of the airport and it's not far.

Geneva to Flaine in good conditions is about 1hr15mins - the last 20-25 mins up the windy hill. Car hire would probably be best option - but could understand you being wary because if the snow starts falling it could be fun! Might be worth looking at transfer companies is Lez Carroz too and thats just down the road. Never used them for transfers but we used to use http://www.inresortservices.co.uk for our other in resort services.

Fair one Hoppo, but what I cant understand is why I can get a pre booked taxi here to the airport (same distance as Geneva-Flaine) return for half that price? Crazy, obviously been seen coming

Chappers, Maybe because there are A) lots more taxi firms vying for the business B) no investment in snow tyres C) no chance of having to fit chains (I would want lots more to do that) D) the time/distance thing - that drive up to flaine is a right chore!

Chappers, you may be able to find a shared private transfer, which would be cheaper. GVA website might help, or the Flaine TO.

Have a look at http://www.a-t-s.net/ they provide a very good transfer service. But you'll pay at least £200 return...

nuttyprofessor, I'm afraid my experience of http://www.a-t-s.net/ is that they don't offer a very good service! I tried them first for my Val Thorens to Geneva transfer, they advertised the route, accepted my booking and then e-mailed to say they'd cancelled. To be fair the booking was accepted subject to confirmation and they did e-mail back promptly. My impression was that they'd started in the same way as www.3vt.co.uk, but then expanded rapidly by contracting out routes which they didn't serve themselves.

Hi,
a couple of years ago i i took a plane out there on the friday booked us into a family room in france for the night (free transfers to and from the hotel) got up early the next day for the ski bus transfer up the mountain. This worked out far cheaper than flying in on the saturday I think I got the room for about £90.00 and that was really high season (kids half tearm). The bus transfer and hotel where all booked over the internet and all went very smoothly.
Hope this helps and have a great trip (Lucifer is one of the best red runs I have ever had the pleasure of carving down

Chappers, Depending on how old your children are, don't miss Father Christmas arriving on xmas eve. There is also normally a torchlit descent by the instructors and fireworks.
Mine are a bit to old to get excited by it now. We will be there again this year.

Does anyone know if any of the snowparks will be built/open for Christmas week, or is it purely snow dependant?

From memory that is the earliest they open ( sorry we don't go over that way much). Even if there is good snow cover, they unfortunately do not always open all the runs in the Flaine area. I suspect that as the resort is not normally that crowded they don't see the need and are saving them for New Year week. As long as the Grand Massif links are open, which snow dependant they will be there is still plenty to do.
Chappers, I hope all the family are joining in the snowdance.

Yes, it has become a bit of a ritual for us staying in the P&V Res La Foret. Not sure when yet depends on snow 20/22-30. Driving so no problems. Nearly always in the Perdrix Noire (the local) in evenings (ski club rep meets there). Some friends there at same time. Could have a beer or 2 or 3 or 4 etc.

We are staying at the Vega apartments. Ever been there? They look pretty basic but we booked there as it was cheap and a half decent location.
We were thinking of driving but picked up some cheap fights from Southampton so it made sense esp with our 3 year old. And we live in Portsmouth

Chappers, I'm sure you will be ok, I have only been in one appartment in the Vega and it wasn't great, but I think they are all privately owned so fingers crossed you get a good one. If you expect basic you can only get a good surprise.

Chappers, On friday evening/night they were even making snow (I was told down by the ice driving). We saw a continual stream of large dumper trucks transporting it up to the slopes around the Bissac restaurant while we were drinking in the Perdrix Noire.
