Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

During trip waxing

I was wondering if its necessary to have skis waxed halfway through a weeks trip?
Im also curious what the waxes are like that can be applied straight to the ski on the mountain and if they are of benifit?

If your bases are drying out mid trip then I'd get them waxed. I use a rub on wax for really warm conditions and the great old Zardoz notwax wiped on each day for colder skiing - it really seems to help the wax last longer and gives you added 'zip' on the flats.

If I'm being diligent I try to hot wax every three days. If I leave it a week I do notice the difference, especially in very cold or very warm snow.

Zardoz is great in all temps & expands the temp range & longevity of the base wax. It's especially good in warm conditions & is easier to use/more cost effective than rub/spray on's. Although not necessary in cold conditions I'm told it performs even better to let it dry & give it a buff with a tissue. Best to hot scrape clean the base when back home if you've used ZN a lot.

Selecting a wide temp range uni minimises the possible need for additional waxing if you're only away for week.

I just got back from a 2 week trip and fully re-hot-waxed after the first week, using Zardoz to top up every couple of days. The bases were looking a bit dry after 3-4 days, so they definitely needed attention at the end of the first week. I also took my edge sharpening tool along and used it almost daily to keep the edges nicely in tune. I found that even more important than the waxing.

If I was only skiing for 1 week, I'd just make sure they were thoroughly hot waxed up at the start and get by with a daily Zardoz top-up. But I would sharpen the edges at least every other day.

uktrailmonster, I had to touchup our edges every night in Tignes last week were the pistes were very hard, plus plenty of stones/rocks etc. Those in the chalet that didn't had badly burred edges by the end of the third day. Our bases were well waxed prior to going but still needed a wipe with Zardoz on the last day.
