I'm off to Banff in just over 2 weeks time and I really want to make progress with my Skiing, I find Ski School to be a bit slow at times so maybe paying the extra may be worthwhile, anybody think I should bother?

RichardB, I'd recommend the Sunshine Ski School rather than the Club Ski programme at Banff. They have a better reputation for instruction and have small groups. A full day's private lesson costs the same as a 4 day workshop http://www.skibanff.com/ski_board_school/adult_programs.php
Friends of ours went on a workshop 2 years ago - they were the only ones in their group so in effect got a private lesson.
Personally I find there's nothing wrong with group lessons provided you are in the right group for your ability and its a small group. Talk to the instructor about what you want to achieve from your instruction.

What is the going rate for private lessons? I'm off to Saas Fee on Thursday and I would love to have a lesson to give me something to work on. How easy are they to arrange?

I would highly recommend private lessons if you can afford them. It is much more intensive than groups and the instructor will quickly find your level and push your technique on, and take you to places you thought you would never ski. Some of my best memories are from a couple private sessions.

At my resort they give a web page which has all these sort of prices on. It might be worth a look at your resorts web-site. I paid £21 per hour last Feb.

I've been told (by a ski instructor) that one-on-one ski instructuion can be very intense - and does not suit everyone. But we all know the problems of being in a large group. Some of the best instruction I have had was in a group of 4 with easiski last January. For me it was just right. Looking at other members of the group was very useful as easiski brought out teaching points, and there was little chance of missing her eagle eye if you were doing something she knew you could do better.

If you do go for private lessons - I'd recommend 1 hour each day rather than a full day.
Like achilles says it is intense - I would find myself dead after the 1 hour lesson - i don't think i would have had value from a whole day.
You then get a chance to recover (in a bar!) then go and practice on your own and then be ready for the next lesson the following day...
(I tend to buy 3 or 4 1hr lessons over the course of a week, but have only done Europe - so can't give any specific advice on instruction in Canada)

Do the early bird package (definitely available at LL, don't know about Banff) - IIRC it's 99 dollars (plus tax) for 90 minutes private starting 8:30am, the lifts don't open to the GP until 9. It's a MEGA bargain!

My SO had 1 hour with an instructor at Lake Louise - it wasn't particularly cheap, but she said it was very much worth it. (I'm thinking it cost around $100Cdn) She arranged it thro' the main cabin at LL.
The instructor was extremely knowledgeable, and clearly both proficient at teaching AND skiing.... and as everyone knows, being an expert does NOT make one a teacher.
i'd second the 'several sets of 1 hours and not a full day', for mental and physical fatigue reasons.

jedster, I agree. I´ve never done anything but private lessons. Loads better
|

Only able to go skiing 2 weeks each year and I have found that a private lesson at the start of the Hols helps my body to remember what it should be doing and also gets my brain back into skiing mode. Absolutely indespensible for me.
