Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Updated "Current conditions in Zermatt & Chamonix" with pics

We are off for our last ski of the season this coming weekend and would be very keen to hear from any snowHead s who are in Zermatt or Chamonix at the moment. Forecast is looking good for the next few days Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Current plan is to ski on the glacier in Zermatt on Sat/Sun then maybe head to Chamonix on Monday on the way back to Geneva. Any of the Zookeepers around to tell me what is likely to be open on the Grand Montets?

Also does anyone know if the Vallee Blanche is still possible at this time of year?

Thanks

Thanks stewart woodward,

The following comment on Pisthors means it's certainly not a goer for us!

"The removal of the ropes won’t prevent serious alpinists from the descending the ridge but will discourage novices."

Sounds like Tignes would be another good option for the weekend but already have hotel booked and paid for in Zermatt.

Roger C, Saas Fee conditions were very good last Friday, in fact it was snowing intermittently down to about 2500m. I don't think it is still open but as it is just across from Zermatt I would think conditions would be OK in Zermatt as well. Saas Fee does have the advantage of being north facing however. I would check if Saas Fee is still open and if it is give some consideration to driving over if Zermatt isn't so good

Sorry, just checked, Saas Fee is closed - despite the fact that it's snowing!

Roger C,

The arrete is ok without ropes although crampons might be useful and you can hire them. The trench is normally so deep you don't use the rope anyway... and it the queues that make it awkward and time consuming so in that respect the rope being down is a good thing..It is info about the general condition of the rest of the glacier that will be most useful...maybe contact the tourist office or speak to the guides. Unless you are confident up there you will need a guide for anything but the classic path, anyway.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

From what I hear, it's not really in condition - very little snow low down thanks to all the warm weather recently.

I have heard reports of lots of new snow in Zermatt though. Probably worth checking out...

JT I've done the VB once before and as you say the crowds make the arrete a pain when it's busy. Even if we did the classic route we'd take a guide but it sounds like it's not a goer now anyway

Arno, Zermatt it is!

Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:
It has been raining on and off for the past couple of days in Chamonix.

Was up on Grand Montet yesterday and there was about 20cm of fresh snow on top. It must have rained up to about 2300m though, coz it wasn't great further down.

It's supposed to rain tomorrow also but Sunday should be pretty good.

Lots of crevasses are becoming visible on the front face of the Grand Montets.

smolo, was that in Chamonix-in-Chamonix? Or Chamonix not really in Chamonix. Please enlighten. I heard yesterday was rather good. Tomorrow looks pants, depending on Sunday's head maybe I'll get one more day, maybe not...

David Murdoch, I was skiing in Argentiere.

Yesterday was super-nice when you could avoid the places where the moguls have been created over the past couple of weeks. There was only enough snow to create what i call "invisible mogul fields" ... i.e. the moguls were only just barely covered but hard and icy underneath. Not particularly nice in the popular areas but really good if you know where to go.

Tomorrow could be too cloudy for really nice skiing, as everything good will be above the tree line and anyways all the chair lifts on the Dream Forest side have already been closed. I will go for a run or two in the mid-morning/afternoon, but I'm not expecting much.

Sunday could well be epic if it clears up.

Whoo hoo - at least 50 cm of fresh pow on he top of Grand Montet today !!!

The only problem was you couldn't see much of it due the clouds up to about 11 am. The clouds have cleared now for the Sunshine Skiers. Ha, I pity the fools ... us early worms definately got the bird.

Why am I home ? Well I broke my binking just 600 metres from the top of Grand Montet. I can now say without a shadow of a doubt that moguls are tough on one ski. For all you 1 legged skiers out there - hors piste is the way to go.

Well we got back last night from a great bank holiday weekend spent in Zermatt and Chamonix.

Saturday morning we headed up to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise area and skied in the best conditions we've experienced in the 20 or so days we've been on the slopes this winter! There was a dusting of fresh snow over a nice base, perfect for some high speed on piste carving and we also had a few runs in the piste side powder. Hardly anyone up there, no queueing and Mrs C particularly liked the heated covered 6 man chair. It also snowed a bit....

Sunday on the glacier again, it snowed a lot more and was cold and windy! Piste conditions still excellent the trouble was you couldnt really see very far.....We headed down about 230 then it seemed to clear up a little Evil or Very Mad

If you have the chance I'd recommend Zermatt from some great spring sking at the moment. We stayed in Alpen hotel Taesch for about £25 pppn - a right bargain and across the road from the train station. Great deal on lift passes at the moment as well, about £45 for 2 days.

Monday we drove over to Chamoix and skied the Grand Montets. No queues here either. Had a couple of good runs down from the top with snow very nice except for the last few hundred metres to the lift where it was getting slushy by 2pm. The itineray that branches off towards the lower bit of the Valee Blanche was in very nice condition with some fresh tracks still to be had following the weekend's snowfalls

I think the lifts in Chamonix shut today anyway so this section of the report isnt much use to anyone!
