We are a family of four (2 adults,2children) due to visit Lauterbrunnen for our first skiing holiday.
I am after some advice on ski passes for this area. We will need to give the nursery slopes a good going over as we are all novices with only some basic lessons behind us. Will we need a lift pass to use the nursery slopes in wengen? I appreciate we will need to buy tickets for the train from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen but this will be a lot cheaper than a full on area lift pass for all four of us for the day. Once our confidence grows then we will then be able to justify the full lift pass.
Any advice would be gratefully received.

Foggy42, welcome to snowheads.  Can't help with your specific question though, other than to suggest you ask the ski school. Some resorts have "points passes" which are cheaper when you're not taking the big lifts. But in some resorts the nursery slopes (especially if the snow is poor lower down) are quite high up and instructors will make decisions depending on conditions.

Foggy42, not sure about the nursery slopes in Wengen. I am trying to remember if the lift had any gates. If you do go higher to the Kleine Scheidegg for lessons, the "lift" up there is a rope tow and would not need a lift pass! Although you would be travelling a lot further by train so that would cost more! As pam w, said, someone with a better memory than I will be here soon.

My recollection is that you can buy carnet tickets for the Figeller nursery area in Wengen

Foggy42, depends on several things, but in general I'd say for adults get the ski pass for teh local area, if nothing else it will allow you to go up teh mountains for the views in teh afternoon, these days ski schools try to get you up teh slopes as soon as they think you can cope, with the kids ask the ski school for advice as they will let you know what you need, or you could PM Ronald as he's worked/is working as a ski teacher there

Have you thought of trying the ski school in Murren as it is a higher resort,less travelling time back to Lauterbrunnen each day and is a much nicer resort ....lol... but true !
In Murren the first nursery slope with a tow is in front of the Jungfrau hotel which has a sun terrace that leads directly onto the nursery slope so you can have a sit down and a drink while watching them. The tow is free while in the ski school !

Unless you have already booked your accommodation in Lauterbrunnen I would suggest that you do consider staying in Wengen or Murren.
I don't have experience of the ski schools in Murren but if you use Wengen then you get the train up from Lauterbrunnen and get off at Wengen to meet with the ski school.
If the snow is not good in Wengen then the ski school will operate at Kliene Schiedegg, so yet another train.
Whatever you decide, enjoy

Our kids learned to ski here (aged 7 and 9). We stayed in Lauterbrunnen and I quite enjoyed the train ride up each day - gave us plenty of time to put suncream on/sort gloves, hats etc and great views. They had their first lessons on the Männlichen bit - there was a rope tow on a virtually flat bit and then some almost flat green paths which crisscrossed the other pistes after the first day. I think the Swiss do half price for kids. We all had passes and had fun on the trains - they are good for a rest when the children are tired. I would have thought there wouldn't be a massive difference in price of say 4 days + train fares and a 6 day pass, but I may be wrong. It's nice to go up to Kleine Scheidegg too. There is a green down to the Arven chair which is very easy. Ours were skiing down to Brandegg by the end of the week quite happily. In fact I think they only had a day on the rope tow; the greens are so easy to learn on and you get a rest on the chair going up. Much better than drags! It's a spectacularly beautiful place - hope you have a great time.

Not too sure about the traveling time thing - 14 minutes to Wengen aand 23 to Murren acccording to www.rail.ch

We will be staying in a motorhome at Camping Jungfrau so 'Hopefully' will not require a Hotel. (unless the heating goes south!!!!)
The trip will probably turn out to be an adventure as opposed to being a holiday. Thats the way we like it.

As for skipasses.
Under 6 are free as long as they ski with their parents.... A ski teacher is not a parent ....
Children under 6 can get a picolo pass (25 frank for 6 days) which gives them access to the entire jungfrau.
Under 8 can still go this cheap, but only with a skischools approval.
Alternatively, depending on level, you can buy 10-ride cards at Wengiboden. 8 Franks per card... I only (barely) recommend this course when I have a class that won't even go up to wengiboden lift until after the 4th day (that is usually the 3-4-(5) year old classes)... On Figeller (the steep of the 2 lifts) i burn through rides quite quickly...

Some people in the big Jungfrau thread have had good results getting a bit of adiscount through them.

Jungfrau Hotel, Oberland, Steinbock all are able to serve a nice dinner.
Moved the Schutzen off the list. Don't know what the new owners are thinking, but adding CHF 5 to all the prices without changing anything else isn't going to carry my agreement.
