Is Gressoney linked by lift to Alagna yet or is the only way an off-piste itinerary?

AFAIK it's still an off-piste itinerary only
I've heard (unconfirmed) rumorsthat by next season the link should be effective.
But then, I've been heariing that for the past 15 yrs.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thanks for that. Is it an easy itinerary or do you have to have a guide?

Cheers Matteo. I assume you've skied the Monteros area? I haven't but will do from April 2-6 basing myself in Champoluc. Looking forward to it and a contrast to Verbier where I was a few weeks ago

Thanks. I've skied several resorts in the Val d'Aosta but not got to those ones. Intend to some day - possibly as part of my idea to do a different resort each day, but that'll need a lot more info. to plan properly.

Hello mikehall58 and skanky
Just came back from Champoluc last sat (well I was there one day, left home at 0600 and came back at 2100)
Had a field day. Temp was not cold neither warm, weather not too sunny neither cloudy. The perfect day as far as I'm concerned.
Unlike in many other places, they aren't too strict with on-piste off -piste rules, so there is some nice off-piste sking just few feet outsidethe official runs. All snow was set (packed), so there were some nice places were to jump off small (very small) cliffs, places where to ski bumps (there's one place that is well known all over Italy, one of the few last bumps "wall" naturally left, I mean that snow cats never groom it, allowing bumps to naturally form)
From Champoluc, take the main cable car (called the "crest", and first thing in the morning, ski the main piste back down, it's a nice run, and in the morning is not crowded since it's used mainly to reenter back to the village, but, according to my friends who have their 2nd house there, is the best run in Champoluc, I naturally disagree, I deem the bump wall of the sarezza run the best feature in Champoluc, but to each his own. Then take the cable car again, a first chairlift, and on the second chairlift, midway on your right, there it is, the bumps "wall" (it's very small compared to what pepople used to ski, say, Chamonix is used to)
Ski it, then take again the chairlift and move to the "Stafal" area, from there you can reach Gressoney. Cross the road and you are on the Gressoney snow fields.
Take the lifts in reverse order and there you are back in Champoluc.
you can reach the "stafal" area by car too, the main chairlift is a couple of km outside Champoluc. The "Crest" bubble lift is right in the middle of the town, though.

Forgot to say, I was skiing with a friend and our four sons all boys aged 5 to 9)
The followed us everywhere (bumps included).
Even my 65 y.o. mother had a go at the bumps, she was swearing at me all the way down, but enjoyed it nevertheless.
As said, it's a very small, insignificant thing, compared to what one can find on the other side of the Alps (BTW there is also a deviation so if you don't want to ski down it, take the "normal" road)...

Cheers Matteo. I'll be based down the road in Frachey giving me quicker access to Gressoney slopes but will also do as you say

Hi Mike,
I was in Champoluc over half term and the piste to Alagna hasn't been created yet, but its an unchallenging off piste route with a fine mountain refuge at the top called Guigelmina or similar. Rather trickier is the route back via the small cable to the top of Alagna (Punta Indren) and back through one of 3 couloirs, but only say moderate black in challenge, not hairy chested skiing.
The cable station was built but definitely not open on 15/2. The SCGB website (hiss) says its open, the monterosa website says building work was abandoned in mid November, but then this is Italy and what will be will be wheter its officially open or shut!
I know this isn't helpful. If you do go and the return lift to Passo di Salati isn't open do take a guide to Alagna. I had a very memorable day's skiing there last year

That's right. It's all very confusing. If you want a definitive answer as to whether that lift is open I suggest you ring the Hotel Dufour in Gressoney Trinite, where the guides are based (can't remember the name of the head guide, but he's very helpful and has good English. He's very honest about everything to do with the skiing in that region.)

Cheers Martin and David. I can handle most stuff but I'm nowhere near an advanced skier and the word couloir throws me into apoplexy. However, as I ski it I'll keep emphasising the words 'moderate black'!!!!!
