Poster: A snowHead
|
Might be a bit of a specialist question but here goes. I scored a pair of Look P18 bindings on ebay for about the same price as Snow and Rock sell Solly Z12s. Bargain. Problem is their brakes are too narrow for the skis I would like to mount them on. I know the theory on how to bend the brakes but I don't have the kit to do it and I'm pretty useless at that sort of thing anyway. This is the theory:

So my question is: does anyone know of a ski tech in the London area who might be up to the job? Alternatively, do either of the Zookeepers have experience of this? Bringing them with me on a trip to Chamonix would be a possibility

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

Don't think that you'd get a shop to do it for liability reasons.
It's can be hard to accurately match the bend locations when cold bending. I'd apply localised heat (torch) to the arms at the bend points rather than doing it cold to avoid risk of fracture & to get a more precise bend location.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

spyderjon, heh - more kit i don't have
i'm actually thinking about taking them to a metal worker. he won't be bothered about liability and he might be able to do what you suggest or just cut the brake and weld in a small extension

Arno, might be cheaper to buy wider brakes.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Arno, I'd avoid a cut & weld, cause at low temps, and high stress, the weld may fracture. Applying a bit of localised heat will make the bending easier - just don't heat it so much that the plastic of the brake startes to melt.
If you were prepared to take the risk (i.e. don't blame me if I ruin them, etc), I have the tools at home to do it.

marc gledhill, they have, this season, started making wide brakes for P18s. however, it seems that the difficult bit is getting the brakes out of their housing - bending looks relatively simple if you're careful
Wear The Fox Hat, might take you up on that if i can't find somewhere local to have a go. not sure how much of an issue the possibility of breakage is given that i'm only likely to take a big winger in soft snow (or breakable crust...). i know it's a risk, but it's a bit hit and miss whether the brakes get enough purchase to do anything at all in those conditions

Arno, that's true. I'd offer to do it this weekend, but I'm going to the Zoo.
