With only two weeks left to go until the World Cup season starts, the Soelden ski station is ready. Until just a few days ago, there was a lack of snow, but organisers have been working hard to get the Rettenbach slope ready for the season's opening two giant slalom events. ...Dates of events - 28 and 29 October 2006

I'm wondering just how they are going to make the event happen. It has been very warm with almost no precipitation here for the whole of September and October. They must really be scratching to get enough snow together for a world cup GS, especially considering that this is the only race in the season that is (usually) raced on natural snow.

Snow conditions on the Rettenbach Glacier vary from good at the top of the snowfield to marginal at what would be the traditional finish area. However, Riml [Head Couch US Team] said organizers have stockpiled immense mounds of snow in a parking lot and will have several trucks shifting the snow to the finish area or elsewhere along the course, to repair and patch marginal sections.
“They’re going to hold the race, no question,” Riml said. “The race hill is closed, but you can ski the outside of the course. They’ll push snow onto the course where it’s needed. The only way we won’t race is if the weather’s so bad that the racers can’t see. We’re gonna race!” |

I emailed C4 and got this short response:
"World Cup Skiing commences in Nov. Please check your listings for exact details."

maggi, It is German, but it is unencrypted on analog satellite.
The commentary and analysis is good, plus it gives you a chance to practice listening to "Skiing German".

BBC could do a really good job with their digital version these days, they use it a lot for wall to wall snooker and Wimbledon, also for some motorbike racing as well. They made a reasonable job of the Winter Olympics as well so they certainly spare a little bandwidth and show the world cup racing as well. No sign of Ski Sunday yet either. C4 listing only mention the cross country so far.

Thanks all. Looks like I'm going to miss it then. Would have been just the thing to get us PSBers in the mood .
FenlandSkier, you're right about the BBC. If Eurosport don't have the rights, BBC should buy them. They have enough channels now and surely skiing rights would be a fraction of what they pay for footy? (Not that I know anything at all about filming rights, prices etc.)
