Poster: A snowHead

a couple of the guys in my boarding group got avalanche gear last year and id like to follow their fine example. afterall theres no point just 2 people in a group having it if the worst happens. (and theres no point having it if you dont know how to use it - so i intend to get training)
but any suggestions on what to buy in terms of tranceiver, probe and shovel?

Speak to the stores with backcountry specialists and they can rig up a course and supply the kit for rent or sale. Mountain Spirit, Backcountry UK, Lockwoods, Facewest...

there's a lot of personal taste in choosing a transceiver. try a few out in a shop.
get a metal shovel and the longest probe you can find

my mates got 'peips' tranceivers. i suppose if we all had them it might make learning and practicing easier

frostie1861, there have been quite few threads on here about the various pros & cons of different beepers. Have a little search around, there were some good insights.

and make sure the shovel handle is comfortable and the shaft long enough for effcient digging. Snow is heavy stuff !

I got a Barryvox transceiver which I am very pleased with - It's very straightforward to use and if the time ever comes when you need it the more straightforward the better I reckon.
Only one problem is that you do have to physically turn it on unlike the ortovox where if you are wearing them they are already transmitting.

Not sure about over there but over here all beacons operate on the same freq. 48MegHz or something. Either way having one by itself isn't much good in use or to practice, so I bought a pair of beacons (ortovox F1s) when the time came. Now I have one for me and one for friends that aren't as deep into BC.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

3snowboards, 457 kHz - higher frequencies are blocked by water (snow!)
